The French election

I like Le Pen's catchphrase: "We're at a crossroad. This election is a choice of civilisations"

Still be very very surprised if she wins though. The French are too attached to the EU.

Fillon, the conservative candidate, was expected to withdraw from the race yesterday over the scandal about his wife's dubious job on the public payroll.
Instead he vowed to stay in the race.

The result will be to hand the presidency to a very leftwing candidate. More conservative voters will either stay home or vote left than.vote for Le Pen.

That tosser thought it was quite acceptable that his wife had been on the payroll for 15 years.

Of all the European countries the French have by far been more enamoured with pinko Socialism than any other. They honestly believe there is such a thing as a free lunch if only the country would become truly socialist without reservations.

Their mentality is still stuck with the obsessive nonsense that Marla likes to spruik here.

Remember Bill Clinton's blatant lie to the public?

The message is: If the women voters think you're a handsome 'spunk' and a beddable 'hunk' - they'll forgive you anything and vote early-and-often for you.

That's why women should only be allowed to vote the same as their husband's choice of candidate.  Cool

Oh no, that was different. Trump was always going to win from the day he threw his hat in the ring.
These other people are not Trump.

Its not that "the french" are too attached to the EU,  but that the demographics are too far gone.  There are not enough actual frenchmen to save France.

That's true as well, but the agriculture sector which is conservative is welded on to the EU.

They collapsed in the Franco Prussian War; the same thing was going to happen in 1914 until the Allies arrived; and the did not exactly put up a fight in 1940. Is there any reason to believe they will do differently now?

Is this an admission that the country is under threat?

He certainly had the magnetism and charm from day one: I agree that Trump was entirely different but also different circumstances although france is under a particular set of circumstances so,  everyone is of course still very curious!

I am not French, it is not for me to admit. On the day of the last Aliakbah, the one at the Louvre, the BBC quoted President Hollande as saying "Terrorism is here to stay." If that is not an admission, I don't know what is. It is also an admission of defeat. Interestingly, that particular quote was deleted from the BBC within an hour.

It's an irony that de Gaulle who inspired the French to resist in WWII is also the person who sowed the seeds of their present problem by admitting all those Algerian Muslims.
Right or wrong?

That was a time when an increasingly secular West saw Islam as just another Christianity, and expected enlightened tolerance to rub off on them. And of course, those who still cling to that illusion, will call you an Islamophobe, if you point out their error.
