Obama on Terrorism

Here is an article from the Huffington Post, covering Obama's recent speech on the subject government policy towards Terrorism. It is quite even-handed, and there is logic to it that is one of Obama's traits that I like. I don't buy into this rabid anti-Obama rubbish, especially when it comes from people who are comfortable enough to despise those who cannot afford decent health-care. The worst of those conservatives are not reluctant to take tax-breaks, and where were they when the government was handing out billions to the Banks and Wall Street? Notice how easy it was to convince the public they could not be allowed to fail? The biggest confidence trick in history. But I digress.

Obama's attitude to Terrorism, and that of most governments, are tactics applied after the fact. It relies entirely on prosecution, rather like car-theft. Obama is proud that the courts have put a few terrorist away for life. But nowhere does he mention the terrorist cause, which over the last twenty years is almost entirely fanatical Islam.

Not too many people will disagree, but I think it is fair to say the reason for this omittion is a general reluctance to offend muzlims. That is in line with Obama's even-handedness, but metaphorically speaking, he does not wish to offend our enemy's friends. That is the West's weakest piece of logic. And if muzlim fanatics are going to be locked up, how big a prison will be needed to put them all away?

The answer of course, is that we are not. Instead, we are going to wait around for them to kill people, expect our police to risk their lives for chump-change, and then have the taxpayer cover the cost of putting a few "terrorists" (not mentioning any names) through the system. Nothing wrong with that picture, is there?

Muzlims who reside in Western countries need a blunt reminder that tolerance has its limits, and that if they wish to defend fanatics, they are no friends of ours. But politicians who are afraid to offend muzlims by going to basis of terrorism, are not fit to hold office. On such policies, I am not sorry to see Obama go, but to be fair, Dubbya was no better. Will the new administration be brave enough and intelligent enough to fight the problem with realistic policies and tactics? I doubt it.
