It is human nature and economically rational for entities to seek to maximize their profits.

If it is cheaper to import supermarket products than to procure locally why shouldn't they do it?

Even the A$ decline hasn't been enough to turn the advantage back to local manufacturers.

And with pressure from the consumer all of that can be changed.

bullsh1t ... woolies is slowly removing all the branded stuff and replacing it with their home brands, of which they have several labels. You aren't going to get a choice as long as their is more profit in it for them to import crap from china.

BigOl64 wrote on Nov 27th, 2016 at 6:01pm:
And I doubt all of those accusations are quite true either.

try read the labels next time you shop

We occasional shop at woolies, sometimes coles and funnily enough there are thousands of products from (made in, product of) Australia. And we NEVER buy chinese products and still manage to fill out trolley with Aussie products.

So.......................

But everything you said must be true, otherwise you would look like a right cretin.  Smiley Smiley Smiley Smiley

Sure you aren't shopping at woories?

According to Aldi 80% of what they sell in their Australian stores is sourced from Australia.

Proudly Australian made

Since our first store opened in 2001, ALDI has played an important role in the Australian community. Each day, our operations improve the livelihoods of local businesses, create employment opportunities and deliver high quality products to Australian families at everyday low prices.

We have worked closely with Australian farmers, producers and manufacturers to establish long-term relationships. The majority of ALDI's exclusive brands are sourced from Australian suppliers, and we only source products from overseas when we can't find the product, quality, efficiency or innovation we seek, here in Australia.

Here are just some of the ways we proudly support local suppliers:

We provide more opportunities for Aussie farmers, reducing the stress of competition;
Our simplified processes make working with us as easy and efficient as possible, allowing suppliers more time to invest back into their businesses;
We provide security for many Australian manufacturers, with high-volume, timely and consistent orders helping their flow of income;
Our planned expansion into South Australia and Western Australia will result in increased volumes, as well as providing opportunities for new, local suppliers to partner with us.

A quick trip to any store or online would put paid to the idiocy that you're presenting as fact.

Coles and Woolworths maintain that they endeavour to source the majority of their food products from Australia, but one in two products in the Woolworths Select brand is imported.

MERCHANDISE DEAR.. NOT GROCERIES OR FOOD ITEMS..

they sell a lot of other things...that are not made in OZ...

in fact in my local ALDI  the food section is smaller than the books and lawnmowers.

So you were lying when you said all products come from overseas?

And as a consumer I can quite easily buy Australian from either of the two major supermarkets chains, as well as knowing any profits are paid to Australian shareholders.

Shareholders like anyone who has a super fund, people like yourself.

Unlike Aldi where all profits go to germany and never to return to these shores.

Glad we got that cleared up then.  Smiley

Apart from the $2.8 billion in goods & services we export to Germany every year.

Oh, and except for the $1.1 billion in tourism dollars they spend here every year.

So, apart from almost $4 billion a year, our money never returns to our shores.

Typical.
