Scams
May 29th, 2016 at 10:06am

I check and clean my spam folder every day as I get a fair bit of legit stuff that lands in there. I've seen the Auspost ones, a fake one from a courier company I've used but here's a new one and I'm granting point for creativity.

I would however lowered the amount to $250 or $500 to still get the greedy but make it more believable.

I read my business email thru gmail and the spam filter is brilliant. All the phishing emails end up in the spam folder, but as I said I get 2 or 3 legit emails ending up there every week, so I sift thru it every day.

Simple rule. Never open links from email unless it's someone you actually know or was expecting.

The obvious stuff is obvious, African millionaires, dick pills, earn $2000 a day, but there is much more subtle stuff now, and the Bunnings voucher is a good example.

I have had a couple recently purporting to be from the ATO, its a recorded message that goes on suggesting you are in trouble with the Tax Office and asking you to call a Sydney number (02). That caught my attention so  I tried calling it back immediately but got no answer.

I thought I would report it but found the online reporting site a bit of a pain to use so gave up.

They're all coming from outside of Australia so not much action can be taken.

Because I rang it back, that tells them nothing, it might also mean I am a Cop as well.

Had quite a few of those left on my answering machine last year. One so far this year. Either 02 or 03 numbers.

But, I guarantee they're not coming from Sydney or Melbourne or anywhere in Australia.

Yes I imagine you are correct, not sure how they are forwarding a false Calling Number Identification signal on the phone system though?  As the number was in the message and recorded on the CLI display of the phone

I just edited my last post. They're not using the phone system as such. They're using VOIP and faking the numbers.

Actually You are spot on, this is the same as sending a text message on Skype that shows up as coming from your mobile.

Thanks Carl

Scam phone calls are very common here as well. I get men who sound like they are from India who claim to work for Microsoft and need remote control of my computer. We have caller ID  and I generally say "meat department" when I know it is a scammer. They sound confused and ask for one of us by name and I tell them they have reached the meat department at the local Walmart.

What now begs the question is why do they use this recorded message  and then dont speak to you if the call back number is dodgy, unless they are waiting to hear you speak and in my case I didnt?

Dunno?
