Personally as I'm someone who has regularly been paid penalty rates in the past I do think this area should be changed.
These days we have a much different working environment than in the past.
Shops are open longer and less people attend church, and are not worried about working on Sunday's,  reasons Sunday's were singles out for much higher rates.
Not everyone has a weekend on Saturday and Sunday these days some have them during the week, this can actually be advantageous to some people.
So, I think weekend rates should the same for Saturday and Sunday.
Keep higher rates for public holidays.
Pay people an adequate base rate so loading is not such a big issue.

Fully agree.

They will eventually get it the way they want.

People working to survive, only money for rent and food, no way to save.
That makes them a captive *(Slave) labor force that will work for next to nothing.

The government will eventually go too far, and then the whole pace will go to hell.
As long as I get to kick a few pollies, Ill be happy.

the whole title reflects a bad mindset.

your work should be something you are passionate about.

the concept that "working" is somehow being "penalised" is just pitiful.

they should be called weekend "passionate" rates.
wokers who are keen to learn, become more valuable and develop a sense of contribution should volunteer to work weekends and overtime.
leisure and fun should merge into work. In the end, you shouldnt know if you are working or having recreation.
Actually, the whole concept of "recreation" is just for pussies. Someone who is "on purpose" wouldnt find any joy in entering the Durrrrrr state of the scrub .(at home , on the couch, relaxing...how pitiful)

Now, there's a surprise, cheeky....

And I thought that, all those years ago, you were just trying to lure McLaren, aka macca, slr, makka, maqqa and others, into the Labor church.

I'm truly shocked....

Cheesy

Excellent and sensible post.

Increasing the base rate would apply to everyone so effectively you end up paying Monday to Friday workers penalty rates and substantially reduce the incentive for people to agree to working on weekends?

So, I think weekend rates should the same for Saturday and Sunday.

Agreed, how about we pay Sunday rates on both days ?

Well, well well...  twice in a week...
I agree with John....  the majority of people work to live, but not in a job they love but one they can tolerate and get paid for.  One they can hopefully keep.
Jobs people love, that can maintain a good living standard are few and far between.

Ah no.
Some people get an inadequate base rate...  not all.
Weekends can happen any day of the week and should probably be time and a half, at most double time.  Anything else is unreasonable.

Few and far between.
I've had 5 in 14 years and I have loved all of them.
It's a career, I've bought into the company vision, I've loved what I do.

I refuse to believe I've just been lucky.

There's loads of careers out there for people.

Going to work everyday just to get money and not have any thought of development, career objectives, corporate engagement, advancement etc
Well that's going to make you very unhappy.

Mondays to Fridays but if I took a job that worked both Sat and Sun as regular days I know I'd get off other days where I could pick them up and take them to the park after school etc.

I get home 8pm on average every night John. I work in a career I love and that's why I've progressed at the rate I have.
People who are out the door at 5 are usually the same ones who complain "it's just a job" and always want more money.
