Comes down to mentoring /training and proper supervision, you may know your way around a drill press , doesn't mean everybody else understands the hazards associated with using a particular piece of equipment .

Exactly right.

Its idiot bully managers that expect everyone to know everything without training.

They cost businesses money, the community money looking after injured people.

The problem with bad managers is that you can not train the bad attitudes out of them.
You can train for skill easily but attitudes are far more difficult.

To install a bench grinder or a pedestal drill at work -
reference to a 100 page document is required in each case.
There are so many regulations to follow -
they have gone overboard with OH&S.

If it saves a life or stops an injury then what's the problem ?

Because basically if the operator is a fool then
no amount of regulations will prevent an injury.

In my workplace it has come down to
only one person who can use the drill press
because safety boots are required & the boss is not going to buy safety boots for every Tom Dick & Harry.
Also - only one person has enough experience to understand the 100 pages of rules.

The same happened with a 3 phase lathe in my previous workplace.
Now - that is very dangerous!
Only one person was allowed to use it -
a qualified fitter & turner with 20 years experience.

A screwdriver is dangerous in the hands of an inexperienced operator , hence why we familiarize ourselves with the safe work instructions that accompany most tasks.

Dear leftwinger -
so you're strongly in favor of extremely strict rules
& multiple layers of bureaucracy around OH&S?

The low standard of the workplace that employs you says a lot about you as an employee.

It explains why your technical arguments are so poorly understood by you and based on bias rather than actual knowledge.

Stricter than strict - really overboard -

double or triple whatever the law is.

No issues - I am saying that it reduces productivity with no gain in safety.

I can always appreciate someone with such a low standard of education that even the most simple of concepts perplexes them into apoplexy.  Grin  Grin Grin Grin Grin

Your workplace does not even issue the most basic safety gear to your workers let alone trains them adequately to use entry level equipment. That says a lot about the p1ss poor professional standards at your workplace and the subsequent p1ss poor standards of the workers they employ.

Understand now, Einstein?

Considering that most people might need to use a drill press for 5 minutes per year
then it's hardly surprising.

Don't make assumptions Big head.

I suggest you snap out of it , it's part of your job , you're actually starting to agitate me thinking that there is people that work side by side with you on a daily basis with your attitude to safety.

Safety and all its red tape is so predominate in the work place because of the very attitude you have displayed here today. Nothing more dangerous in the workplace than a know it all.

I don't think you know what the hell you are talking about, unless you are some loser office johnny, (which I suspect in your case is true) you use a range of power tools (including drill presses) to conduct work, if you are in the trade or technical field.

It does reinforce my opinion of you not being very technically minded or capable.
