He's 73 in March (born March 12, 1943). Give the guy a break.  He is only just a bit older than you are, Aussie, and seems to still have all his marbles.  Wink Oh, he did Law too.  Grin No. He didn't buy Taxi plates .... how wise he is.  Grin

Quote:
Philip Maxwell Ruddock (born 12 March 1943) is an Australian politician who is a member of the House of Representatives representing the Division of Berowra, New South Wales, for the Liberal Party of Australia. First elected in a 1973 by-election, he is the only Member of Parliament from the period of the Whitlam government (1972–75) and the Fraser government (1975–83) still serving. He has been the Father of the House of Representatives since 1998. He is the second longest-serving parliamentarian in the history of the Australian Parliament (only Billy Hughes served longer).[2] Ruddock served continuously in federal cabinet during the Howard Government, as Minister for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs from 1996 to 2003, and then Attorney-General from 2003 to 2007.

Quote:
Ruddock was born in Canberra and was the son of Emmie (née Chappell) and Maxwell "Max" Ruddock, a Liberal member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly between 1962 and 1976. He was educated at Barker College in the Sydney suburb of Hornsby before entering University of Sydney, after which he practised as a solicitor. He was articled to the firm Berne, Murray and Tout and was promoted to partner.

He is a great deal older than me.   Why would a bloke at 73 years of age (with or without marbles) need to keep his hand in our pocket after the golden handshake he will receive anyway in the way of entitlements?

Maybe he should.  It would demonstrate that he is able to fend for himself and not need us to prop him up with an obvious sinecure.

Six years is a "great deal older"?

Perhaps he is a dedicated Pollie (rare) who hung in there due to his Constituents? At least Phil Ruddock did NOT take early retirement and cash in on the Tax Payer benefits for the last 10 years or so.

Good on him.  If he is still fit enough at 73 why should he sit around, posting on Political Forums or going golfing when he can do something useful?

I know of no retired Judge who has been handed a Government sinecure in addition to their usual retirement benefits.

Hang on!  Yeas I can ~ two spring to mind now I think of it.  Royal Commissioners Cole and Dyson Heydon.

I suggest you get that link to that other place out of here, or I will refer it to PN who has banned reference to it here.

It is 70 for the High Court and also in Queensland.  I think the Family Court retirement age is 65 but I'm not sure.

For starters, he has done more for Australia than you and me combined.

He is an honourable man. Not a showman, I grant you, but an honourable man.  Unlike you.

So what?  He goes and gets the usual golden handshake worth hundreds of thousands of dollar.

Why does he not have the 'honour,' morality or common decency to get his hand out of our wallet taking this sinecure as well?

If he wants to work on, great ~ seek re-election!  He'd win easily!  Nah, this is part of Turnbull using our money to get rid of dead wood he does not want in Parliament.  It is a simple as that.
