A day's trade lost.  Two actually, as the workers got paid for doing effall.

Multiply that out by all the businesses closed for the day because of excessive penalty rates and that adds up to a schitt load of potential work that could have been undertaken by otherwise unemployed individuals having to live off the enslaved tax payer.

Penalty rates cost jobs.....tut tut tut....

Management closed because a few hundred dollars of profit not worth opening.
Much the same with workers: on a holiday it may not be worth going to work when it's paid the same amount as any other day.
Yeh there will be some workers that are willing to go lower pay.  I wouldn't mind doing a do nothing middle management role or CEO etc for half their pay either.
Don't use labour supply market argument.  Because one could extend that with so many refugees you could virtually bring labour costs to well below a living wage by feeding off desperation.

In fact, you wonder why libs aren't more open to refugees since they are one link to the slavery (indentured) days of the past.

The restaurant closed for one day.

The permanant workers were paid to stay home (as it was a public holiday - you were paid to stay home too).

Nobody lost their job.

They returned to work the next day.

The owner admitted that he would have made a profit if he had opened.

No jobs were lost because of penalty rates.

Penalty rates don't cost jobs.

It couldn't be any simpler.

Quote:
One of Adelaide’s top restaurants — popular with politicians, celebrities and tourists — has closed its doors for Australia Day celebrations because of excessive penalty rates.

This is despite North Terrace restaurant Parlamento being positioned opposite the Adelaide Casino, Parliament House, the Festival Centre and a short distance from the Adelaide Oval footbridge.

The more than 40,000 people attending an Australia Day concert and the Australia v India T20 cricket match at Adelaide Oval last night would have guaranteed the restaurant a full house.

But Parlamento co-owner Daniel Rattenni said take-home profit would have been only a “couple of hundred bucks” once dishwashers, baristas and kitchenhands were paid “professional” rates of at least $48 an hour excluding superannuation — more than double the standard hourly rate of $20 an hour.

“Even if we came out with a couple of hundred bucks (profit), what’s the point?” he said.

Oh well, the workers got to stay home and they got paid anyway.

Another failed political stunt from the Libs.

Bringing down premises' rent and insurance costs will help businesses far more than wages - because these make up a majority of costs more often than wages are.

Sadly libs won't do anything about it as it is quite difficult to implement regulation over this compared to attacking workers.

Not if they were casual workers which is more than likely the case.

Yes, the permanent employees got paid to stay home and the casual workers got to have some well deserved time off.

The restaurant opened again the next day, and nobody lost their jobs.

There's nothing to see here.

The ideal situation would be for government to have absolutely no say in the private transactions and goings on between the workers, the bosses and the customers whatsoever, the sooner that everyone realises that government is just legislated mafia the better off we'll all be.

Very likely they much preferred the day off, maybe they had plans for the day.

In reality there is insufficient information to make realistic comments about this case way too much we don't know and we don't know how much is true from what we were told to start with.

I assume you got a magical way to track illegal transactions like terrorist funding?
