its whats known as FREEDOM OF CHOICE..

its the AUSTRALIAN WAY..

as a small business man you cannot gauge what your takings will be...but the staff will still expect to be paid....if he has 10 customers or 110...

so he has a choice.. will he or wont he..

and he he I WONT>

good luck to him..

maybe this small business man wanted a day off as well..he may get sick of 7 days a week.

We agree - why the news story ?

There is a big chance that the owner was not going to be there either anyway.

n ot often these days... a small business is that way because he does work 7 days.... thats my experience anyway..when the door closes he doesnt stop...

It has nothing to do with what they are worth.  It is the fact that they are working weekends or public hoilidays.  People that work these hours get the penalty rates.   Wink

Yes, and nobody is condemning his choice.

Once again, you've missed the point.

It's his business and his choice whether it opens or not - nobody has a problem with that.

However, why did he feel the need to politicise his decision by putting this sign on the window:

“Parlamento will be closed on Australia Day due to public holiday costs. Kitchenhand/baristas/dishwashers/waiters all on $48 per hour minimum, plus 9% super — on top. Nb ... ‘not complaining. just explaining’. Happy Australia Day.”

Why not just:

“Parlamento will be closed on Australia Day".

It's a political stunt, that's why.

And then he kicks an own goal by saying that he still would have made a profit if he did open.

Open and close your business whenever you like, but leave penalty rates alone.

Bingo!

Despite having to pay penalty rates, he'd still make a profit.

An own goal.

His choice his business  ...

Yes.

Nobody is disagreeing with that.

It's his business and it's his choice whether he opens it or not.

Everybody agrees.

What part don't you understand?

Many restaurants and shops are open on public holidays.

The ones who aren't are perfectly within their rights to keep the doors shut.

Where's the problem?

You seem very confused on this issue.

Nobody was being greedy (except the restaurant owner: $200 profit wasn't enough for him).

Nobody was demanding that the restaurant open.

The restaurant was only closed for one day - nobody has lost their job.

Penalty rates are not new.

Nobody is asking for penalty rates to be increased.

The restaurant workers will receive their normal pay, and have a day off as a paid public holiday.

Which part are you still struggling with?

I wouldn't have opened for that amount of money either... it wasn't even guaranteed that he'd even get that much..

something breaking down or some broken dishes would have blown all of his profit and he's have worked for $0 himself..

businesses are not charity organisations like the forum loafers think that they are..

although most of the wouldn't work in an iron lung themselves..  Roll Eyes
