Antivirus programs are a personal thing.  I think people over think them and over spend on them.

When I first started out I paid an exorbitant amount for McAfee and it let me down badly.  I then paid another exorbitant amount for Norton which let me down even moreso, turned out there was a virus in my Norton.   I hate the way McAfee tries to insinuate itself onto your computer with program downloads.

I have also used AVG, Trend Micro and Panda but I have used Avast for some time now with no complaints.  It blocks unsafe sites, scans every download and it's free.  If I were going to spend money on another antivirus program I would choose Kapersky.

It's just a matter of personal choice and trial and error in my humble opinion,

It was about $1300 & over 3 years ago.

With all that GB of RAM and multiple cores? I must be shopping for PCs in all the wrong places.

Dust?
I had to remove the CPU heatsink -
clean out the dust - I actually washed it in the sink -
dried it -
then re-installed it with fresh silicon heatsink compound.

Ah!

That's prompted a costly memory with me. A few months ago I did the same thing - released the toggle-clamp on the heat-sink and returned it when I'd cleaned it.

Next thing I was at the Computer Repair Shop getting lectured by an excitable Indian fellow who was telling me that these heat-sinks require THERMAL PASTE when you're resettling them back into place ...

D'Oh!

And so ... it looks like my next online purchase will have to be a tube of this outrageously expensive paste.

Heatsink compound   $9.95

Dear Herby,

what anti-virus program are you using?

A very expensive one. Trend Micro Maximum Security. It's crap, but I've been running it for a few years now to help the economy.

NONE of my 'Rescue Discs' (I have 4 of them) has ever worked. Not once. Ever.

I used AVAST free version and recently a PC wouldn't boot properly and required a hard reset to get it to boot. SO I ran a boot time scan and it found a rootkit virus and deleted it. Normal virus scans under windows won't fix those sorts of viruses. Also for registry cleaner I use Advanced System Care free version although the paid version gives you a deep registry cleaner.

“In computers,” reminds me of a senior tech officer in my last PS position who said “CPUs are where you have your lunch!”

Your opinion is much valued here, Black Orchid.

Thank you.

It seems Neferti suggestion that all you need is AVG Free is right on the money.

I prefer Avast to AVG but they are both free so why not try them both and continue with the one you prefer?  Just make sure that you disable whatever other antivirus you have on your computer while you are scanning.  You can enable it again when finished.
