I have no idea what the 32GB of RAM cost.  I had this Custom Gaming computer built by JW Computers a few years ago to my specifications. I selected the stuff I wanted and chose 32GB RAM so I didn't have to "upgrade" at a later stage. The entire computer cost about $2,200 or so, can't remember exactly.

Dear Herby,

what anti-virus program are you using?

A very expensive one. Trend Micro Maximum Security. It's crap, but I've been running it for a few years now to help the economy.

NONE of my 'Rescue Discs' (I have 4 of them) has ever worked. Not once. Ever.

I've never used that one -

I know that Norton or McAfee are good.

I use Nortons & it's excellent.
It knows if you're going to an unsafe site & stops the connection.
It also knows if your downloaded software is OK by
comparing with other sucessful installations of
the same software.

That's pretty much how my TrendMicro works.

Somehow it missed that dodgy RegCure app I downloaded.

A bit of research with Dr Google would have rang the alarm bells Herb.

I expect a long grovelling apology from Greggy.

My Trend Micro didn't shape up too badly with 4/5 stars and equal with Bitdefender Free and Avira at #4 in the rating.

I've been using AVG ... the free one ... for 10+ years or so, have never had a problem.  I even have AVG on my Samsung mobile phone.

I am not sure that any of the AV programs would have detected that dodgy software. I have used dodgy software in the past that had undesirable effects on the PC that was very difficult to totally remove. But were not really viruses.

I like the way that Norton uses other peoples experience - almost as guinea pigs.
You can see if other people have used the software you're intending to download & whether it caused any problem.

You can see for example that 10,000 users have used that very same software with no problems
& it gives you the confidence to install it.

That is a powerful feature.

Jesus! I'm impressed.

Wow. Fantastic. You've got me feeling greedy for some more RAM upgrades. I'll be getting it done at some other Computer Shop where I normally go to. Indians and Arabs who prefer to quizz me on WHY I want this and that, instead of just doing what I ask them for.

I explored the idea of buying RAM upgrades online, but after checking the guts of my computer I couldn't see how/where to slot them in.

I also want a decent cooling system. I've never bought a computer that didn't have a pathetically inadequate fan-system. I think they do it on purpose so you have to return to the shop to have bigger units put in.

What are your fans like for that massive 32GB RAM capacity that you're running, Neferti? It must sound like a 2.75 horse-power air-conditioning unit in there.

The most I've ever paid for a PC plus OS is $1400.

Dear Herbert,
the RAM runs cool.
The fans are for the CPU.

I have 16 gig of RAM but have never used more than 12 Gig
when using multiple advanced  64 bit programs.

Huh?

but ...

Okay.

Incidentally, what did you pay for your PC?

And DO you ever open it up and Air-Brush the dust that might be in there? I just did mine yesterday. CLOUDS of dust hung in the room after I'd blown the insides with a Pressure-Pak air thingy.

And I swear I saw some sort of crawling insect leap out and scuttle off at a rapid pace to seek cover under the lounge suite.

It was about $1300 & over 3 years ago.

Dust?
I had to remove the CPU heatsink -
clean out the dust - I actually washed it in the sink -
dried it -
then re-installed it with fresh silicon heatsink compound.

I have a program called Core temp 1.0 RC6 which tells me
of my 4 cores individual  temperatures.
It's good to monitor to see if there's a problem.

With all that GB of RAM and multiple cores? I must be shopping for PCs in all the wrong places.

Ah!

That's prompted a costly memory with me. A few months ago I did the same thing - released the toggle-clamp on the heat-sink and returned it when I'd cleaned it.

Next thing I was at the Computer Repair Shop getting lectured by an excitable Indian fellow who was telling me that these heat-sinks require THERMAL PASTE when you're resettling them back into place ...

D'Oh!

And so ... it looks like my next online purchase will have to be a tube of this outrageously expensive paste.
