Okay Carl. I'm not looking for speed ... I'm looking for a 'Rescue Disc' that actually works for when my system crashes.

The Windows Installation CD that used to come with every PC purchased used to do the job of repairing the system - but no more, and that's because they don't issue this CD any more.

What they give you now is a piece of crap called a ...

Preinstallation Disc for Microsoft System Builders Only

or ... Windows 7 OEM Preinstallation Kit

I have never been able to make repairs with this disc.

So you tried the "free" version and it found 1000 invalid entries?  There is your problem, you need to buy the program. Then you will be able to get rid of those invalid entries immediately. I run the program each week and there is always some invalid entries, depends on what I have been doing on the computer ... uninstalling stuff leaves behind invalid entries, so Registry First Aid is useful and I use it on a weekly basis.

There is a lot of "free" stuff on the Net and most of it is a waste of time.http://www.rosecitysoftware.com/reg1aid/

Nope.

The best app. for removing even the tiniest bit of remnant when doing an uninstall is ....... waaaaaait for it ....

link

ENJOY!

And it's totally FREE with NO sucker-punch waiting for you when you've run it for the first time.

Herb, do you use any imaging software to make backups of your operating system?

I use Macrium Reflect (free) to make an image about once a week. That way, if something bad happens you can restore your previous image in a matter of minutes and everything that happened since you made the image 'ceases to exist'.

It can even clone your entire disk (useful if you have multiple partitions on a single hard drive) so if your hard drive suddenly dies you can quickly swap it with the cloned one.

Very good point, Carl.

I used to use Macrium Reflect, but something went wrong.

I'll try it again. I have an external hard disc here. I'll have another shot at doing a complete backup, including cloning the hard drive.

Last night - an hour before bed - because I tried to download a dodgy copy of RegCure.

I'm using my backup computer now.

The crashed one freezes all the time so I can't run the virus app. or work the Recovery CD. The mouse cursor no longer works.

Looks like it'll have to be another Computer Shop clean-and-install job. Over $100.

Herb go to MSY computer website and buy Kaspersky internet security, you don't need the disc just the key you can download the software.

$22 for 2 years then you can surf the net without fear, the time you waste on fixing fukups alone would make it worthwhile.

Everyone hits the occasional pot-hole like me - it's just that I lack the sort of fragile 'pride' that keeps the rest of you in PC closets.  Tongue

Thanks Baron ... BUT!

The sh*t I'm paying for now runs to hundreds of dollars and expires sometime towards the end of 2017.

What pisses me off about my Trend Micro anti-virus is that it bitches-and-whines every time I run SuperAntiSpyware or Malwarebytes anti-Malware ... which always find heaps of nasties that need deleting.

I'm thinking of dumping SuperantiSpyware.

It's getting lousy reviews now.

Cut your losses and bugger it off herb, I have used Kaspersky for years, they found the Stuxnet virus Israel created to spin the centrifuges out of control and setback Iran's  nuclear program.
The crafty jews set it up so nobody else would be affected, the Iranians were sitting there watching it spin into oblivion with computers saying everything was ok.

MSY can send the code for Kaspersky in a letter so stuff all for postage, don't buy the disc you don't need to pay for it you can download that.

Thanks Baron ... BUT! I'm committed to TrendMicro for the duration. It's now ONLY very occasionally that I have a crash that doesn't right itself after a few hours.

I do NOT use Registry First Aid to "speed up" my Desktop computer ... I already have 32GB of RAM and have never had a problem with it "slowing down" or crashing.  I use Registry First Aid as I would use a duster in the house ... "housekeeping".

I think Herbie's problem could be a "hardware" one or drivers or something  .... or he has downloaded so many "FREE" programs that hate each other and throw a tanty every so often.

Do you create a Restore Point every time your computer is running OK, Herb? At least then you have somewhere to go back to.  Wink

Dear Herby,

what anti-virus program are you using?

A very expensive one. Trend Micro Maximum Security. It's crap, but I've been running it for a few years now to help the economy.

NONE of my 'Rescue Discs' (I have 4 of them) has ever worked. Not once. Ever.

I've never used that one -

I know that Norton or McAfee are good.

I use Nortons & it's excellent.
It knows if you're going to an unsafe site & stops the connection.
It also knows if your downloaded software is OK by
comparing with other sucessful installations of
the same software.

I too have used Norton for many years without any issues despite people claiming it hogged resources or some such crap.

If anyone has a decent computer like mine -

an i7 quad core with 16 gig of RAM then it will eat Norton for breakfast.
