Technically speaking my PC's crashed again ...
Jan 29th, 2016 at 7:40am

Last night - an hour before bed - because I tried to download a dodgy copy of RegCure.

I'm using my backup computer now.

The crashed one freezes all the time so I can't run the virus app. or work the Recovery CD. The mouse cursor no longer works.

Looks like it'll have to be another Computer Shop clean-and-install job. Over $100.

I found the needle in the haystack.

What a bummer.

'Javaws.exe' was the culprit.

Cease and Desist downloading stuff.

Somebody with your level of incompetence with a Computer should NEVER EVER touch the REGISTRY ...

I just DID learn. I found the needle in the haystack.

The CCleaner registry cleaner is WAY too feeble and superficial. I've run RegCure before - and it was the best.

I'd love to know what apps. you have in your Program Files. A lot MORE than you'd like anyone to know, I'll bet.

Have you tried Registry First Aid?

http://download.cnet.com/windows/rose-city-software/3260-20_4-80580-1.html

I used the free one for years and finally paid the $25 or whatever it was for the full version a few years ago, you can use it on all your computers (you get a registration code).  Never had a problem with it.

Ah, I remember corrupt registry files, trojans that sneak into your registry, the constant need to defrag, computers slowing down to a crawl.....

At least I don't have those problems any more now that I have a Linux based OS.  Ext4 is a properly designed journalled file system.

I must explore that option one day.

Neferti - WHY aren't you running a Linux or Mac etc?

'FREE' - my arse!

It found 1000 invalid entries, and then only fixed 25.

Needless to say I've uninstalled this con job.

I've used that before. I'll check it out.

Yep - another con-job.

" "Change of heart" 3 stars by gimpguy Aug 19, 2013 (Read all my 1159 reviews)
While I have been a long time user of GU, I now have thrown it to the side for every simple option you want to check or uncheck you are met with a code window to purchase... There are still great freebies that will do what Glary does.
Sorry GU, you've pretty much locked all useful options forcing people like me to have to purchase. I wouldn't call this free any more, more like "Disableware" in my opinion. Keep it"

Occasionally I come across support issues. Google Earth (64 bit) is the worst. It took some effort to get it to work properly. Garmin GPS devices have no support either. It's a risk you run when you're using a minority platform. There are usually ways and means to get around these problems. On the whole I have less torn-out hairs than I did with Microsoft.

If you're used to Windows, changing to Linux has its ups and downs. It's not for everybody.

Dear Herby,

what anti-virus program are you using?

So you tried the "free" version and it found 1000 invalid entries?  There is your problem, you need to buy the program. Then you will be able to get rid of those invalid entries immediately. I run the program each week and there is always some invalid entries, depends on what I have been doing on the computer ... uninstalling stuff leaves behind invalid entries, so Registry First Aid is useful and I use it on a weekly basis.

There is a lot of "free" stuff on the Net and most of it is a waste of time.

A very expensive one. Trend Micro Maximum Security. It's crap, but I've been running it for a few years now to help the economy.

NONE of my 'Rescue Discs' (I have 4 of them) has ever worked. Not once. Ever.
