A US intelligence official has told CBS News that the Syrian passport recovered after Friday nights’ attacks – and believed to belong to one of the bombers – may be a fake, writes Louisa Loveluck, Telegraph’s Middle East Correspondent.
The official said the passport did not contain the correct numbers for a legitimate Syrian passport and the picture did not match the name.
A Syrian passport, found near the body of one of the attackers at the Stade de France, had been used to travel through the Greek island of Leros last month, Greek officials have confirmed.
Serbia says the holder of that passport had also crossed its border from Macedonia and sought asylum at one of its registration centres.

Macedonia has become a major transit route for thousands of Middle Eastern and African refugees and migrants who cross over from Greece and then continue into Serbia, Russia.
“The border between Greece and Macedonia was very easy,” whispers Selim, a 36-year-old Syrian. “But this is the most difficult bit, the Hungarian border.”

The new law in Macedonia approved In July this year in parliament after pressure from human rights groups to stop the arrest of illegal muslim migrants. It allows migrants to apply for temporary asylum at the border or the nearest police station. That will allow them to travel legally through the country for three days.
Human rights activist Suad Misini told The Associated Press that the new law didn’t go far enough.
Interior Minister Mitko Cavkov told lawmakers that the number of migrants has tripled since last year — with 2,000 to 3,000 people trying to enter every day — and criticized neighboring Greece for letting thousands flow clandestinely across the border. Greece is a major destination for refugees and migrants entering Europe, most of whom cross, in turn, from neighboring Turkey.
In Turkey, the fake passport business is booming. For a one-off payment of around £1,000, it is possible to purchase a document that once belonged to someone else. In this case, a simple switch of the photograph opens the pathway to a whole new identity.

According to BFM TV, police are still on the hunt for one man that was involved in the attacks.
The station said the French man was “not among the seven dead attackers or the men arrested so far in Belgium” but was seen outside the Bataclan concert hall.
He is known for petty theft, according to reports, and his brother is one of those arrested in Belgium, RTBF in Belgium reported.
According to BFM TV, three men were stopped on the French-Belgian border last night but allowed to enter Belgium because they did not feature on any wanted list.
The MailOnline reports that Serbian media claims one of the terrorists was Ahmed Almuhamed.
The newspaper reports that the man was carrying a Syrian passport and is aged 25.
He is believed to have been blown himself up at the Bataclan concert all where people were killed by gunmen during the siege on Friday.
Fake Passport Came From Turkey
Omar Ismail Mostefai has been named by French police as one of the gunmen after a series of coordinated terror attacks which killed 129 and injured 352 across Paris on Friday.
Omar Ismail Mostefai was known to police as nothing more than a petty criminal before he became the first gunman identified from Friday’s attacks in Paris, which left at least 129 dead.
Identified by his finger, which was found among the rubble of the Bataclan concert hall, the 29-year-old was one of three men who blew himself up killing 89 people in the bloodiest scene of the carnage.
Born on November 21 1985, in the poor Paris suburb of Courcouronnes, Mostefai’s criminal record shows eight convictions for petty crimes between 2004 and 2010, but no jail time.
Corinne, who lives opposite his former home, said he was “always polite but kept very much to himself and his family.”
She and other neighbors said he and his wife and baby daughter had moved out of the two-storey four-bedroom house -which is owned by a housing association – three or four years ago.
“They were here only for a couple of years. For much of the time his extended family was there too – his parents, his brothers, his 12-year-old sister,” said Corinne, 54.
“He usually wore an Islamic robe and had a short beard,” she said.
His wife did not wear a headscarf but did not appear to have a job as she was almost always at home, several neighbors said.
