So why are you coupling the SCIENTIFIC peer review process with the publishing industry?

The scientific peer review stage is an important element of the scientific process. The "scientific method" is not to be confused with the peer reviewed process.

The PhD thesis examination stage is a prime example of peer review. And guess what? When the thesis passes this stage, the PhD is able to be published.

When a scientific article or thesis fails the peer review process is may be due to a variety of reasons. The scientific method used may be fine, but perhaps the work isnt novel or merely a derivative of previous work.

Because the scientific peer review process is ONLY actually require by scientific journals, NOT by science itself.

lol

peer review is integral to how Science functions, progresses and most importantly deals with paradigm shifts.

Obviously you believe that science operates in a vacuum and is carried out by androids.

well done gizmo - is it any wonder you deny AGW and cling to your religion of hatred an deranged puppetry?

Apologise and leave

Laugh away, but I'm still right. Getting your work reviewed by someone who understands it is a fairly common practice, but is in no way an absolute 'necessity'. It just saves the embarrassment from typos, bad spelling and silly mistakes (i.e the moon is made of green cheese)

Most authors/writers get friends or colleagues to look over their work before they send it to the publisher, so they have an idea of how the public will react. But that is NOT a "law", just a convenience, like "spell check" on a computer.

who said it was necessary?

A person can conduct scientific experiments outside the 'scientific" system and publish their own data and results.

this is not what is being debated here.

read the previous posts to understand better what this is actually about.

Exactly, and the self published results are not usually peer-reviewed, unless they are published in a professional journal.

are you aware of one PhD thesis that was granted that wasn't peer reviewed?

No, but that is a 'review board' not "peer review".

Are the PhD theses reviewed by other students??

the manner in which Science functions today (and for some time now) necessitates peer review as a critical element of the scientific process

.... don't confuse the scientific method with the scientific process as a whole.

No, it does NOT. How can there be "peer review" with (for example) a new discipline???

the review process is identical to that of publishing scientific articles.

examiners are chosen who are experts in that particular field and who can assess the originality and worthiness of the thesis.

A PhD thesis cannot be internally reviewed and assessed by the University or department that the candidate completed the work in.

Do you know why this is the case gizmo?

youre digging a very large linguistic hole for yourself.

you better stop digging champ

you still dont understand how the process works.

Profoundly novel work can still be assessed by your peers for adhering to the basic scientific method and being mathematically consistent.

Paul Dirac's PhD thesis for example, submitted in his early 20s managed to get him a Nobel prize in Physics - a very rare achievement. He mathematically predicted the existence of the anti-electron (or anti matter). It was several years later that experimental evidence verified his mathematical/theoretical prediction.

There were no physicists available that were experts in the area of anti-matter - it wasnt even an experimental area research yet.

What the peer review process demands in this case are reviewers/examiners that can best assess the fundamentals and basic scientific claims contained in the thesis.

the scientific method itself hasnt been re-invented and the logic and axioms of mathematics are well understood and can be applied.
