Wasnt it the asian invasion with you right wing nutters about 15 years back
In my day it was the Vietnamese in Cabramatta and the drug triads. That as well as the usual whinging about Aborigines, family reunion immigration, refugees, Japanese and Chinese investors etc. Then Pauline came along and united them all.
Whats funny though is that muslims were never top of the agenda back then.
the
vietnamese, the greeks, the italians, the chinese.
These groups have integrated well and reached out to "real australia'.
the chinese resturants are a great feature of every country town.
the greek food festival is the biggest food festival in brisbane.
i call on muslims to stop the snarling and anger and victim status and reach out to real australia.
if every muslim family had a barbeque this sunday and invited a dozens aussies over for a feed on morrocan lamb and some belly dancing, the problem would be solved.
Statistics show unemployment and crime rates amongst the Vietnamese descendants to be about as high as the rates amongst the Lebanese muslim descendants. And unemployment and crime is always the measure people use to argue that the Lebanese muslims have not integrated.
Yep, also these idiots fail to remember the EXACT same campaign against the Vietnamese.
"Violent thugs running drug cartels!"
"Fifth Column undercover Communist insurgents ready to commit terror attacks!"
"Communist Vietnamese drug cartels terrorize good god fearing white people"
"Vietnamese taking over Australia and they are going to introduce Communist law!"
In fact, the rise of neo-fascism and extreme xenophobia in Australian politics is DIRECTLY from anti-Vietnamese propaganda. Pauline Hanson didn't give a bugger about Muslims, she was rallying against the Vietnamese, Howard stole that and rallied against Asians during the 90s.
It was only after 9/11 that the quiet Muslim communities "Those guys that make kebabs for you to eat when are off your head on pingas after seeing Tiesto and PvD, it's the 90s baby!" became the target of Australian xenophobia and the Vietnamese became "good businessmen and well integrated" (just like the rallying against the Greeks, Japanese/Koreans and Germans before them)
