Looking at this graph, Panther, do you believe, that if guns were hypothetically banned, that the murder rate would still be as high and thusthe drop in gun homicides, matched by increase in other forms?

Hey bumjack can you do better than wiki?

My answer would remain exactly the same:

Without any ban, hypothetical or otherwise, gun crime & deaths are steadily declining, because of better education, awareness, & the glaring fact that more good people are carrying concealed firearms than ever before. Wink

Criminals worry, actually scared silly,  if their once easy prey might just might be carrying, & if they insist on proceeding anyway, they are finding out the hard way that those that are carrying are very well trained & quite capable of defending themselves. Wink

The only thing I would add is, regardless of how you or I might feel about the subject, it's the American People & only the American People that matter one way or the other, & they don't want draconian gun control.....period.....full stop.....as the murder & crime rates reside without any controls mandated by government (even if government were permitted to by the constitution to do so, which they aren't....) Wink

Good for them. May they continue being the oddest country on the planet.

In all honesty, the US can do whatever the smacking hell they want. Just don't try and defend it as scientific.

And on balance, the most free of governmental control.

I fail to see how thats an advantage. Government control of people is required in some instances, becasue essentially people are idiots.

They don't mind that it offends you.....so, speak only for the company you keep Horseyman.  Grin Grin

I don't care what they do, I care about the validity of the argument. If they want to shoot themselves or not, I dont care.

It would be far more honest to say, we love our guns we know it doesnt really match the constitution, we know it leads to deaths, but bugger it.

Instead, theres this huge whitewashing industry around it.

"Lawful Purpose and Self Defense Act of 2015" Introduced to Curb BATFE Abuse

Source:   NRA -  ILA  Quote:
Chairman of the House Committee on Natural Resources Rob Bishop (R-UT) introduced H.R. 2710, the "Lawful Purpose and Self Defense Act of 2015." This bill would remove BATFE's authority to interpret or reinterpret the "sporting purposes" clauses in federal law, which only serve to undermine the core purpose of the Second Amendment. Under Chairman Bishop’s legislation, all lawful purposes – including self-defense – would have to be given due consideration and respect in the administration of federal law.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in District of Columbia v. Heller that the core purpose of the Second Amendment is self-defense. Nevertheless, many federal laws that regulate the importation, possession and transfer of firearms measure the lawful utility of firearms based on their usefulness for so-called "sporting purposes."

The term "sporting purposes" is undefined by federal statute and has been subject to several reinterpretations by the BATFE and its predecessor agency.  BATFE and anti-gun administrations have exploited the lack of a clear definition of “sporting purposes” to bypass Congress and impose gun control through executive fiat. The most recent (and perhaps most infamous) example of this was the Obama administration’s attempt to ban a highly popular form of ammunition for the AR-15, America’s most popular rifle.

H.R. 2710 would put a stop to this for good and accomplish the following essential reforms to federal firearms laws:

Eliminate ATF's authority to reclassify popular rifle ammunition as "armor piercing ammunition." The federal law governing armor piercing ammunition was passed by Congress to target handgun projectiles, but BATFE has used the law to ban common and popular rifle ammunition, as it recently attempted with M855/SS109 5.56x45 ammunition.

Provide for the lawful importation of any non-NFA firearm or ammunition that may otherwise be lawfully possessed and sold within the United States. BATFE has used the current discretionary "sporting purposes" standard to deny the importation of firearms that would be perfectly legal to manufacture, sell, and possess in the United States.

Protect shotguns, shotgun shells, and certain rifles from arbitrary classification as "destructive devices." Classification as a destructive device subjects a firearm to the registration and taxation provisions of the National Firearms Act (NFA) and creates a ban on possession of such firearms in some states.

Broaden the temporary interstate transfer provision to allow temporary transfers for all lawful purposes rather than just for "sporting purposes."

Virtually anything is possible when you really want to succeed.......just ask the NRA

Sorry Bojack, that dog don't hunt the way you think .... by your personal definition .......

A militia can be an individual ..... A Militia of One .......or a Militia of 100 million, or so, individuals who come together to support the common defense ....... A Militia is each & every individual American.....it's  simply everybody.

Whether you personally like it or not, that's the way it be mate. Your personal like or dislike is of no consequence outside of your own mind (pertaining to this matter anyway)  Wink

The Lawful Purpose and Self Defense Act of 2015

Source: CONGRESS.GOV  The Library of Congress   Quote:
Amends the federal criminal code to modify the definition of "armor piercing ammunition" for purposes of federal firearms provisions to: (1) include a projectile that is designed and intended by the manufacturer or importer for use in a handgun (currently, a projectile that may be used in a handgun); (2) repeal the exclusion of a projectile that the Attorney General finds is primarily intended for sporting purposes; and (3) exclude a projectile that is primarily intended by the manufacturer or importer to be used in a rifle or shotgun and a handgun projectile that is designed and intended by the manufacturer or importer to be used for hunting, recreational, or competitive shooting.

Repeals a prohibition on assembling from imported parts a semiautomatic rifle or shotgun that is identical to one prohibited from importation as not being suitable for or readily adaptable to sporting purposes.

Repeals the condition that in order for a licensed importer, manufacturer, or dealer to be permitted to ship to a member of the U.S. Armed Forces on active duty outside the United States or to clubs whose entire membership is composed of such members, and for such members or clubs to be permitted to receive, a firearm or ammunition intended for the lawful personal use of such members or club, the firearm or ammunition must be determined by the Attorney General to be generally recognized as particularly suitable for sporting purposes.

Includes among the categories of firearms or ammunition that may be authorized for importation into the United States by the Attorney General, within 30 days after receiving an application therefor: (1) ammunition that is not armor piercing ammunition; (2) a firearm or ammunition that is being brought in for the use of a federal, state, or local government agency; and (3) a firearm or ammunition that is being imported for the purpose of exportation.

Amends the National Firearms Act to modify the definition of "destructive device" to exclude: (1) a shotgun or shotgun shell which the Department of the Treasury finds is generally recognized as particularly suitable for lawful (currently, sporting) purposes; and (2) an antique or a rifle which the owner intends to use for (currently, solely for) sporting purposes.

Authorizes the temporary interstate transfer of a firearm for lawful (currently, sporting) purposes........
