"SICKENING surveillance footage has revealed some of Victoria’s top greyhound trainers and owners allegedly allowing live possums, piglets and rabbits to be mauled to death by racing dogs.

The State Government has promised to crackdown on the industry, with Minister for Racing Martin Pakula labelling the live baiting practice “barbaric, abhorrent and illegal”.

The ABC’s Four Corners program last night aired videos showing small animals squealing as they were flung around racing tracks as bait.

The footage showed dogs released to chase a possum as it was flung around a racing track 26 times at high speed until it was left hanging by its spinal cord.

One well-known interstate trainer was recorded excitedly telling others to smash a baby possum’s head in.

Other injured animals were stuffed into small boxes.

The live baiting crisis blew up last Wednesday when the RSPCA and police raided a greyhound training centre in Tooradin, 57km southeast of Melbourne.

Greyhound Racing Victoria suspended 10 people for “alleged live baiting offences”."

Should be a mandatory life ban if caught and a sustained effort to check and catch anyone doing it. My understanding is that they virtually all do it.

Did anyone see it on 4 corners last night ? It will make your stomach turn. If these dudes were on death row in Bali I certainly would not give them a second thought !! They should get the book thrown at them and fine millions of dollars.

"Putting together animals, gambling and prize purses is a toxic mix. It's capable of turning men into monsters."

What a small team of investigators with limited resources has managed to uncover in Making a Killing should put the regulators of the industry to shame and change the sport forever.

MAKING A KILLING, reported by Caro Meldrum-Hanna and presented by Kerry O'Brien, goes to air on Monday 16th February at 8.30pm on ABC. \ so true.... I only saw half of the show I was so sick I forced myself to watch it...years ago I lived near the beach and it wasnt uncommon to fine greyhound skeletons washed up with the ears missing...god knows how many end up being killed wantonly because they havent been the goods....its so disgusting... and to see these horrible men with not a shadow on conscience.

can we presume the RSPCA will be the ones taken them to court.. which means a slap on the wrist...

lets hope those who go to the dog races for entertainment stay far away........
