FOR THOSE WHO ♥ GARDENING
Jan 2nd, 2015 at 1:21pm

If you're like me, and you're passionate about gardening, why not jump in and share with us the type of plants you're into and/or are growing in your garden.

We're always discussing relationships on this forum so it only makes sense that we discuss our relationship with our own outdoor home environment.

I grow most of our fruit and veges. Why? Because organic, chemical free and real sensational smelling and tasting fruit & veges kinda spoil you after a while. The stuff on offer at the supermarket or green grocer might LOOK ok, but it can never smell or taste anything like what you can grow at home.

We're pretty lucky in that we have a quarter acre block so space isn't an issue. It's little wonder that Mum's Vege Patch is now being referred to as Mum's Farm by my family.

I just love taking care of my front and back gardens. It's where we spend a lot of time nurturing relationships with family, friends and neighbours so it makes sense to make the environment where all this takes place as beautiful, fragrant, aromatic and colouful as possible. The fact that large parts of the garden are edible is an added blessing for all who come to share time there.

I live with impoverished soils-- living on the coast means ( most of the time) that soils are very acidic-- I can grow very little, but my dad could grow literally anything.. thinking of going hydroponic. ! Soils that  have to have heap's of money spent on them to make them fertile kind of defeats the purpose.

Hello Ms AG  Smiley

Throwing cow manure, slow release fertiliser pellets then sugar cane mulch before you grow anything can help set the scene for successful planting.

The other thing I've found helpful is locating the best position for certain plants.

Yup, I have an “orchard” of a dozen fruit trees and vege patches front and back (front faces south so gets lovely early morning sun.

I grow tomatoes, enough that with 20Kg bought tomatoes (at Farmers Markets) I can make enough passata for a batch of pasta for nearly every week of the year—I have a small tomato machine good for like 10Kg a pop. Cut a couple up, run through the machine, into sauce pot over high heat, two more, then run the skins through and on to the next 2 tomatoes. Capital mistake to cut the whole lot of tomatoes up—you will get watery sauce.

Chilies, rockmelons, eggplant, cucumbers, zuchini, sweetcorn and beans:
...

That photo was taken not that long ago, the sweetcorn has doubled in size! The power of pig errrr manure! About 2" of pig poo got spread between the rows  Smiley Wink

Almost forgot my latest tree:
...

Not bad for Adelaide! It is right by the back verandah, faces north so no frost and plenty of sun. Had one big bunch last year, two this year.

When you grow stuff you end up with a glorious glut and jam making, drying, preserves and jams, pickles is the order of the day. I love it!

Oh yeah, I got a tree full of plums—see Fermentations to see what I have in mind for them.

Hey Bobby, great to see you around  Smiley

We've got 19 tomato plants growing beautifully at the moment in a full sun/low wind area of the garden with Italian basil herbs growing btwn them. All tomatoes are still green. We have 1 other tomato plant located well away from these and it's presently producing red tomatoes. It's a cherry tomato plant which grew of its own accord after I buried some vege scraps (following a family bbq). Can't wait to harvest our tomatoes this year. Will post a pic when we do.

You're full of surprises I must say. And as for the confirmation, it's not necessary.

Just be aware that on a/c of that pic, my husband and I are looking forward to visiting you at some stage soon lol  Smiley

Ohhh that sounds awful. Next time, we're all crashing out at George's place. I'm sure he won't mind lol.

We just need to remember to pack a few shovels and spades so that we can help him out during our stay on his farm Smiley
