Christians flee Iraq's Mosul after Islamists tell them: convert, pay or die
Iraqi Christians leave city en masse after Islamist militants threatened to kill them unless they converted to Islam or paid a 'protection tax'

Christian families streamed out of the northern Iraqi city of Mosul on Saturday after Islamist fighters said they would be killed if they did not pay a protection tax or convert to Islam.

“For the first time in the history of Iraq, Mosul is now empty of Christians,” Patriarch Louis Sako lamented as hundreds of families fled ahead of a noon deadline set by Islamic State for them to submit or leave.

The warning was read out in Mosul’s mosques on Friday afternoon, and broadcast throughout the city on loudspeakers.

“We offer [Christians] three choices: Islam; the dhimma contract - involving payment... if they refuse this they will have nothing but the sword,” the announcement read.

If this was the fault of Islam how come there were Christians still living in Mosul a thousand+ years after the Muslims conquered the place originally?

I've always understood that the Lebanese civil war was a three way struggle and was primarily about all three factions trying to assert their control over the other two.  The Christians had the same rights as the Muslims as the Druze but the invasion by Israel upset the balance and tipped it over the edge.

True story:

Before Stalin came to power the Russian Orthodox church had thousands of their priests spread out across the length and breadth of Mother Russia.

These priests performed two functions ~ one for the Csar and one for the church.

For the Csar they spied on the people and kept the ruling elite fully informed as to  the mood of the people and what was being said at social gatherings.

And for the church they collected a yearly compulsory tithe from even the poorest of peasants.

It didn't matter if a tithe collection left a peasant family with nothing to eat for the winter ~ guaranteeing starvation ~ their scant reserves were taken by force.

And then Stalin came to power with the consequence that thousands of priests across Russia were brutally murdered by the peasantry ~ at which Stalin was furious because he wanted to use these same priests as a spy network throughout the vast regions of Russia.
