Islam and Shamanism?

http://www.ibtimes.com/mh370-malaysian-shaman-performs-ritual-help-find-missing-...

Just wondering if anyone knows anything about this side if Islam.

A Malaysian Bomoh performed a ritual to try and find the missing aircraft that has been all over the news recently, and was decried by many people, most notably social media and more traditional Islamic practitioners.

This bit in particular caught my eye:

Quote:
A representative of the Malaysian Prime Minister’s Department said the government welcomes help from anyone, including shamans, so long as their practices don’t undermine Islam, Malaysia’s state religion

Which seems to indicate that shamanism is not necessarily at odds with Islam.

How does this practice fit in with traditional Islamic practice, and how common is it?

Oh, and I forgot to mention, while this is all new to me, during the ceremony, there was a chant of Allahu Akbar, and apparently there is some form of Islamic belief involved in the practice.

LOL, reminds me of this photo I got the other day...

...

I did ask my Malaysian contacts about this, and they think its basically unislamic, but generally harmless.

It should be noted that there is a very strong sort of cult of superstition/mysticism in Malaysia - particularly related to spirits and ghosts. Although there are spirits in islam (jin), this seems to be more pre-islamic. You probably wouldn't find a Malaysian who doesn't have some story about a ghost they saw in the office or their home - and there's always a legend attached to it - this was so and so who died in a tragic accident, and now they haunt this place etc. Also black magic - I lost my wallet today because it was taken out of my pocket by black magic. Commercial TV is full of this sort of thing. Also its not just a malay thing, Chinese are just as superstitious.

This was my first thought, as the majority of Malays have common ancestry with the Chinese, and the Chinese have all kinds of superstitions regarding numerology etc. until I noticed it was apparently Islamic based with the chanting and such.

I don't know much about him, but he has apparently become famous, and has triggered some discussion about whether or not it is "islamic". Basically I think because this is actually "in tune" with a pre-Islamic Malay culture that is still strong in society, then it is more accepted.

Funniest thing was when some islamic person criticised him, and he retorted by saying "I'll slap you like a crocodile" - I know right, who slaps a crocodile?  Grin There's been some jokes on social media about that.

Unlike the Arabian jinn-devil worship ritual in Mecca, of running back and forth between Al-Safa and Al-Marwah, that is still practiced by Muhammad's followers today?

Narrated 'Asim: I asked Anas bin Malik: "Did you use to dislike to perform Tawaf between Safa and Marwa?" He said, "Yes, as it was of the ceremonies of the days of the Pre-lslamic period of ignorance, till Allah revealed: 'Verily! (The two mountains) As-Safa and Al-Marwa are among the symbols of Allah. It is therefore no sin for him who performs the pilgrimage to the Ka'ba, or performs 'Umra, to perform Tawaf between them.' " (2.158) (Sahih al-Bukhari 2 Book 26 710)
