You may not like the current policy, but that is democracy.

Ah NO.. we do not live in a democracy. We live in an increasingly fascist right-wing oligarchy.

Panther, you're not listed as a moderator of this forum.  What makes you think you have the right to determine what is on or off-topic?   Roll Eyes

I can read, I am opinionated, & I have freedom of speech.

Show me where it says in any set of official rules that I have no right to a personal opinion on topic relevancy. Roll Eyes

So, as far as I'm concerned the Topic of this Thread is about
Gun Laws in Australia
& that's the topical discussion everyone would expect to see when they come into this thread.

If others wish to talk about another subject at length, by all means go for it, but don't you think they should have the common courtesy of opening another Thread where their discussion would be relevant?

How do you see it?

Generally, I believe threads should be allowed to wander as they see fit, Panther.   The board is there to be used, then use it...   Roll Eyes

In the case of Gun laws, it is entirely relevant to crticise those responsible for them.
Laws aren't made by divine intervention, they are made by humans.
Humans,  in this case, politicians, are not infallible and should be accountable for their actions.
Therefore it is entirely relevant to question and criticise their performance.

I agree
it is entirely relevant to criticize those responsible
for GUN LAWS, & their performance related to GUN LAWS in a thread titled with the topic GUN LAWS IN AUSTRALIA, but I don't agree it is the place to discuss every facet of the government's activity unrelated to GUN LAWS. Expansive discussion in those matters should be carried out in a thread where the discussion would be directly relevant. That would be the more considerate & constructive thing to do to avoid confusion when unsuspecting visitors arrive expecting discussion & information related to GUN LAWS only to find, as an example, post after post discussing turning the boats back or immigration --- absolutely valid topics in their own right, which should be discussed/debated but in a thread more appropriate to that/those topic(s).   Wink

Whatever the decision, world hunger will still need resolution, & the sky won't be falling down on us any time soon. ...

Bush stole that election just like he did in 2004 with the help of his buddies from Diebold.

I gotta be going on.

              Why, Shane?

A man has to be what he is, Joey. Can't break the mould.

              - I tried it and it didn't work for me. - We want you, Shane.

Joey, there's no living with a killing. There's no going back from one.

Right or wrong, it's a brand. A brand sticks.

              There's no going back.

Now you run on home to your mother, and tell her...

...tell her everything's all right and there aren't any more guns in the valley.

Yes it is. Why do you own guns Marla.? One would be .. because you can.

OK that doesn't apply here.  I'd love a Beretta. 9mm eh?

I could say , because I've been threatened by guns, held by people who shouldn't have them. Once was an armed robbery.

Once was by a psycho who'd killed his spouse. He had spent 8 yrs in high security prison, out of an 11 yr sentence. No parole recommended.
He then returned to his evil ways, but hasn't been caught since. I met him in a workplace some yrs later.

I'd like an equal chance.. like you have. Perfectly reasonable IMHO.
There was no policeman ready to stand between me and the aggressors.
I was forced to shoot the psycho twice. NO he didn't die.

I only had a legal bolt-action .22 Chinese target rifle at the time.
Of course that was taken from me by police, and I was charged. He wasn't.  I had a trial,  and I WON, on self-defence. A truly awful and life-changing experience.
But that was before these latest laws. The psycho swore he would kill me. He is still out there.

But I am not allowed to own a weapon for self-defence in Australia. Does that clear it up for you Marla?

The guns I own were either inherited from my father most of which I sold due to the fact I no longer hunt or by a-hole ex-boyfriends who bought them for me just to test their machismo marksman skills at a shooting range once they knew I was in the military. I have them still because quite simply, I'm too lazy to go through the process of selling them. Never did I actively go out seeking a gun.

Fair enough. But your words seem to me to be those of vengeance and not defense. The whole idea of having "an equal chance" is a myth unless I had a gun on me at all times everywhere I went. That is highly unlikely and more trouble than what's its worth. In a lot of ways you'll discover that owning a gun does not make you a safer person, just one more prone to using violence as a means to an end.

I don't understand how you can say that Marla. Where do I talk about revenge?.  You have the same mentality as the Police that charged me.
They were proven wrong by a Jury.
You are wrong.. and you are projecting your own thinking on to my words.  I could have killed him,  but I chose not to. That is not revenge, that is self-defence.

Baron talks from the point of view of the man on the land. He has many useful things to say, but none of it considers it the right of a person to protect THEMSELVES, in their own home.

Come on people.. speak up.

The liberal loves the criminal  and  hates the  unborn, that's  just  the  way  they are. Don't  expect  support  from  them, they would have you try  to  be  in  the  middle  of  the  flock when  the  wolf grabs  it's  next  meal.

While the Righist likes to denigrate people on the basis of their skin colour/shape of their eyes/gender/sexuality/religion.  Take your pick, you hate anybody who dares to be different to what you have considered the "norm".   They prefer sheeple to thinking people.  In fact, they prefer guns to people.   Roll Eyes

Now we have the stereotypes out of the way, how do you propose to deal with children of a rape victim?   How do you propose to deal with the children of a teenage mother who has never received any sex education?  Considering the wrench that adoption creates in the minds of mothers and children, that isn't allowed...    Roll Eyes
