Is the Standard of the Copper Network Too Degreaded to Deliver 25mbps to 100mbps?

Telstra has stringent oversight on how its network is performing and the latest data shows that only 1.5% of its customers reported a fault in their latest reporting period. Telstra CEO David Thodey recently confirmed that speeds well in excess of 25mbps are capable over the Telstra network when he said: “Look at what’s happening in the labs and other countries in the world; you can run pretty quickly on copper, it always depends on the distance from the node, and you know the issue is as you get further away from that node, the performance degrades, but we’ve seen in the labs that are actually working for many European countries speeds of 60[Mbps] down to 25[Mbps].”

It is worth noting that in the United Kingdom where there has been a huge rollout of FTTN, customers are receiving up to 76 mbps with most being able to receive at least 50mbps. This is on a service over copper lines which have not yet been vectored.

The above is from Malcolm Turnbull's own web site???

A different perspective!!!

Quote:
The federal government will either buy the network or lease it. Buying it would likely require the government-owned NBN Co to maintain the network, while leasing it could potentially see that left to Telstra.

The state of Australia's copper network has long been a focus because critics say that it has deteriorated and might not provide the download speed of 100 megabits per second the Coalition eventually wants to deliver over it, with technologies like VDSL2 vectoring.

The Coalition has promised to replace any copper that doesn't achieve the speeds promised but critics say the true state of the copper network is not known, and its costly replacement could blowout the Coalition's NBN costings.

The UK rollout is plagued with problems including contention and malfunctions. FTTH is now the preferred choice.

Telstra copper is of .32 and .4mm diameter, versus .6mm overseas. 25mbps is the absolute max that FTTN could deliver here and most will get nowhere near that.

Forget vectoring here, not enough good pairs to every premises.

Thodey wants to sell the copper, think he is telling the unvarnished truth? You can believe him just like you can believe a second hand car salesman.

The copper is too thin. The copper network is rooted! 25mbps the absolute top speed, attained by very few subscribers. That is why I doubt FTTN will be rolled out.

Tests will be done to confirm the state of the copper network.....Relying on Telstra's CEO who is trying to sell or lease the network would not be wise would it???

Huh Huh Huh

From Turnbulls FAQ page

Quote:
Can FTTN be upgraded?

Yes. Multi-service access nodes (MSANs) allow ‘fibre on demand’, meaning a carrier can offer both VDSL(copper based services) and GPON (fibre based services) services from a single node, and can upgrade on a demand basis. Many telcos such as BT are doing this already. Besides the fibre upgrade from the exchange to the node is all equally useable for FTTP. Part of our design requirements is to ensure that FTTN deployments are done in a manner which renders a future upgrade to FTTP as cost effective as possible.

FoD costs something like $5000 if you are near a node.

What can be done is not necessarily what must be done. The idiotic assertion from longypongy was that you need FTTN before you can have FTTH.

Have either of you two fanbois considered the costs of powering the nodes and maintaining the copper? Even Turncoat admits these costs mean FTTN is soon more expensive than FTTH.

rubbish. it depends on the distance from the node OBVIOSLY.  Plus many ISPs have already indicated they may start offereing free fibre on some internet plans.

you really don't know this topic well, do you?

You said FTTN had to be rolled out before FTTH could be rolled out. Male bovine excrement.

Fibre, based on UK experience, will cost $5000 if you are close to a node.
