In Australia we need to aircondition the nodes, thus upping the power usage again.

There is a difference between powering the network and powering end users equipment—end users increasingly generate a lot of their power themselves—and here the govt has to pay for powering the noded. Then there is the cost of maintaining the copper.

In other countries incumbent telcos own their copper. They maintain it well, use FTTN to sweat the last use out of the copper. Here Tel$tra has neglected that maintenance.

Probably because they were busy laughing their heads off at the gift they were given by the ALP.

On the Dside is where all the problems occur, pits flood, copper corrodes and so on.

Nah, as I said, power and copper maintenance costs soon erode the $2Bn difference (on the Strategic Review figures which leave out about $50Bn rollout costs) and make FTTN more expensive.

Not only that, FTTN can only offer one (mediocre) speed and so has much less revenue. FTTN if run out would be forever on the Budget as a cost. Already subsidies to rural areas will be needed.

Public funding of $29.5 billion will be required for a Coalition NBN. Labor currently claims funding of $44.1 billion will be required to complete its NBN. But many telecommunications experts believe the existing NBN Co Corporate Plan significantly underestimates the likely cost and duration of Labor’s rollout, which involves running fibre to 12.2 million households and businesses.

The Coalition estimates
Labor’s NBN could cost $94 billion
, based on plausible assumptions that are less optimistic than those in the Corporate Plan about revenue growth, building costs and user take-up. This implies savings from switching to a Coalition NBN could be $64 billion rather than $15 billion.

Just so you know Monk.
In the last strata I lived in we had one pit that was continually flooded.  There was no "rotting" of the copper (your preferred term right?)...  (it was insulated for a start) and no problems with the line for data or voice.  The engineers that did the cabling and maintenance in our pits, said there would be no problems due to the water, except them getting wet gloves.  Cheesy Grin Cheesy Roll Eyes Cheesy

When the Libs will give them $30Bn?

Coalition estimates—about as credible as you  Grin Grin Grin Cheesy Even Turncoat has admitted he erred on the [bloody] high side.

And you forget the new pit&pipe remediation technology—FTTH costs will be LESS than $43Bn (SR figure.)

Considering the ALP (and yours so far) history with numbers and dollars, I'd trust Turnbulls figures over the ALPs (and yours). You seemed to have learnt your accounting from the ALP Swan school of fudging figures and making up crap.

Elements cannot “rot” roach, I said corrode and metals do corrode.

Whatever you or longypongy might say re your service always 100% reliable that is not so for a rapidly expanding number of Australian households. Again, read the Hansard extracts I posted here.
