LABOR MEETS TO TALK POST-POLL LEADERSHIP

Labor MPs and senators have descended on Canberra for their first caucus meeting since the election defeat.

FORMER Defence Minister Mike Kelly has conceded defeat in the bellwether seat of Eden-Monaro.

Mr Kelly had been trailing the Liberals' Peter Hendy since the weekend's election, and on Friday morning finally threw in the towel.

"To all my valued friends on twitter I'm sorry to have to say I will be conceding this morning,'' he tweeted.

"It's over. Thank you for your support.''

Mr Kelly, a former army officer who entered parliament in 2007, had on Saturday night been hopeful of bucking the national trend against Labor.

However, his slight lead quickly evaporated during the week, and on Friday he trailed by 633 votes.

Eden-Monaro has long been thought of as a bellwether for the overall federal result, the seat falling to whoever takes government since 1972.

The electorate stretches from Queanbeyan to the NSW coast, and down to the Victorian border.

Mr Hendy is a former chief executive of the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and in 2008 was chief of staff to then Liberal leader Brendan Nelson.

moral of the story: don't trust the ABC analysis on election night. Antony Green had Kelly home and hosed.

Election night analysis is never 100% correct. Green might not have called it correctly on the night, but I respect him as a psephologist because he is not partisan in his analyses. Four hours after the polls closed, does anyone ever call the results of all 150 seats correctly and consistently?

Yet again Eden-Monaro is a Government seat, a position it has held now for 40 years.

absolutely, I'm not criticising Green - I think he does a great job. Just surprising when everyone seemed so certain that Kelly had won - even for a few days after.

The 'litmus' test seat is correct again

E-M always seems to go to the Govt elect

I thought Mike Kelly was a good MP, as he was a well respected Army Officer.  I wish him well in his future career.

No "seems" about it. Smiley The last election where it was not held by the Government was in 1969.
