None of those answers in the poll were fitting.  Gillard failed to connect because she lied, she was unstable and she was not a social democrat, she was a radical free market capitalist.

It certainly is a surprising result but one I think is very soft, Unless you believe that voters are genuine fools it is hard to comprehend that so many people could change sides on the basis of just the change of PM.  and when it is a return to a PM that his own party loathes and one that we know wont remain leader for long it makes even less sense.

Disappointed? absolutely.  but surprise is the far greater response.

Why would you be surprised? You seem to assume that people actually liked the prospect of an Abbott government, and now they have inexplicably turned their back on him. That was never the case. Previously they only said they'd vote for Abbott because Gillard was so on the nose. So it was never about endorsing Abbott, but merely expressing how much they disapproved of Gillard. No one should be at all surprised that the equation has turned on its head now that Gillard is out of the equation. Its pretty much just as Rudd himself said - people want an actual choice - the subtext to that is, they want a reason to not vote for Abbott.

I am seriously frightened of an Abbott Government the way he is talking.  He wants to go on another deregulation crusade to give the banks and corporations free reign again like before the GFC.  What that tells me is that he is a threat to Social Democracy and law and order as well as not interested in the protection and security of the Australian people.  Tony Abbott is alarming...

Gillard being an atheist would not have been any barrier to me voting for her if she was truthful, a social democrat.

it is the extent of the comeback that is surprising.  only 2 weeks ago Labor was so far behind they were looking at losing 50 seats and now they are looking like losing very few.  So what has happened?  just Rudd.  I find the notion of replacing one PM with another whose own record as PM was poor and then getting such a poll bump to be near impossible.

Gillard was hated (and liked by her colleagues) while Rudd is liked (and loathed by his colleagues).  in such a world, Im not sure that normal logic applies.

It shows that Tony is as hated as gillard was.  Hence Rudd is in negative approval and STILL people are going back to Labor.

What a dismal state of politics we are in.

This poll should send a clear message to the coalition just as the one we sent Labor over Gillard.  Abbott is unelectable and you know why, get rid of him!

What a dismal state of politics we are in.

and on that we agree.  I think however that it isn't the pollies who are to blame. it really is the voters who are to blame.  It is said that in democracies we get the governments we DESERVE. After 1993 and the unlosable election the previous practice of announcing policies well in advance of an election ended.  It ended because parties on both sides realised that they risked being punished by the electorate.  that is why no party ever releases detailed policy in advance any more.

Now imagine what will happen if Rudd wins the next election.  Parties on both sides will realise they only need ONE THING to win elections - popular leaders.  Bugger policy, forget performance, screw integrity and capability.  just concentrate on popularity.  Can you imagine anything worse that election campaigns based entirely on popularity contests?  If you think we are policy-light now, wait until policies don't even get mentioned (or developed).

But I agree that I think the polls are overly optimistic. The Libs have already gotten the two independents seats back which gives them a majority already. Labor has to actually WIN seats and I cannot see that happening anywhere.

Kristina never got the poll to 50/50
and Barry wasn't in negative approval.
And in the near end Barry was preferred PM.

Don't worry too much - Abbott is now in a losing position.

The Libbos should have played their trump card - Malcolm Turnbull
but they were too stupid.
