If the job of building this railway was tendered out to China or Japan it would be built before 2020 and cost only a fraction of $114 billion.

I've seen tall buildings in Hong Kong go up in only a few weeks.

Australia's greatest talent is procrastination with everything until some disaster finally pushes bums off seats to do what should have been done in the first place. It's why Australia is 35 years behind Europe with most of its technology.

"She'll be 'right, mate ~ no worries!"

The problem with Australia is that we have amateurs and people of little vision running the joint.

Hopefully it wont require all the crap security planes do either (wth have local planes got rediculous security anyway?). SOB

Sydney's Chinese community is reaching critical mass, with Spot-the-Aussie becoming increasingly difficult in the Rush Hour crowds.

With Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane beginning to resemble an overseas province of the Chinese government, it won't be long before China agrees to build and operate a bullet train up and down the eastern seaboard at the request of our Chinese business fraternity.

"Closer ties with China" has been the catch-cry of our Labour governments since Irishman Paul Keating was taken to lunch by them and made to feel very special.

The Mao Express should be up and running before 2020 ~ no risk.

If you want 'ACTION' ~ you call in Outsiders to do the job.

If you want 'PROCRASTINATION' and political point-scoring to delay a job for decades ~ then you leave our public projects to our own politicians and engineers.

One day the people of this nation will wake up to the fact that we've been voting for 'C'-grade, intellectually impoverished politicians entrusted with the task of being guardians to the current and future welfare of Australia.

The mob in Canberra ~ on both sides of the House ~ are truly a pathetic bunch of low-grade individuals who are more suited to running a sports club than a nation.

But getting back to Australian rail...we are incapable of efficiently running our current interstate rail system... have you travelled by rail interstate lately.?? The idea we'd be able to run a high-speed rail system is laughable. Sadly.

Rather than high speed rail, what about fixing up existing rail links?

Also, with the NBN—who needs to travel when telepresence is cheaper and quicker? I mean the real NBN, no Fraudband that the Libs have no intention of building, they want to clamp down austerity and so precipitate a recession and INcrease debt & deficits!

I have used interstate rail services as an alternative to driving, and flying. I no longer have the requirement to do so... and am I glad??? yes indeed.

All three forms of travel are problematic.

BUT WOW.. how far have we come in a hundred yrs..? sadly we still use the basic technology of a hundred yrs ago.

and your preposition

Austerity = recession and decline = increased debt...

I'd agree with that.

The problem with a bullet train along the east coast is that it wouldn't be any cheaper than taking a plane.

And it would be a lot slower.

And it would be a matter of Russian Roulette which 500 kph train is going to hit something on the track at the cost of over 300 lives mangled in the wreckage that stretches for over 2 km.

If it isn't cattle or kangaroos, it'll be a suicide nutter wanting to make a big splash on his way out.
