thatchers impact was very mixed. it's very difficult to honestly consider her either a great success or a great failure.
This is a fair comment.
To my family in the south of England she was a success.
When she came to power in 1979, the country was in a mess -
Under the Callaghan Labour Government, the Unions were running riot.
Bin men were out on strike so rubbish was even piling up in Leicester Square.
The Miners were threatening to walk out.
The teachers were on strike.
The Public Sector Union NUPE was on strike.
The top rate of tax was an incredible 85% (EIGHTY FIVE) - Leyland Daf was going broke, British Airways was nationally run, the Coal Board was nationalised.
It was the malaise of the 1970s and Britain was the sick old man of Europe.
Mrs Thatcher took the Unions on, she needed to - they were running out of control.
She streamlined the tax system - she enciouraged businesses to run business and not get dragged down by national wage disputes etc.
More people bought their council houses under Mrs Thatcher in the South of England than ever before.
People started to own their own homes.
We went from a weak Government to a strong one - over a period of time.
Now she wasn't popular in areas which were impacted by this move to capitalism no doubt.
South Wales, Yorkshire, Scotland, Liverpool - areas where the unions are strong. "Working Class areas" if you will.
So yes she was hugely divisive.
To my parents she was terrific, she was what we needed.
To others my parents' age in those areas I mention she was the devil incarnated.
Such is life - but Britain re-generated under Thatcher.
Absolutely.
