The software is the network of neurons and synapses. That is largely self programmed from our inputs - visual, auditory, tactile, smell etc. We write our own software, and we can reprogram it at any time.

The basic brain structure - cerebellum, hypothalamus etc are genetic. THe same goes for the voice box structure that enables us to talk.  The genes basically assemble the brain cells, all 200 billion of them and says when to stop, but the connections between the brain cells are largely up to the individual. I say largely because of recent findings from epigenetics.

Language disorders can be epigenetic. They are barriers to the normal process of learning a language. If you Google Epigenetic, you'll be amazed at how important this field has become.

That's where the epigenome comes in.  We write most of the software required to understand language ourselves. Defects in the epigenome reult in language difficulties.

There have been cruel experiments throughout history where children have been raised in isolation to society. The finding was that they did not develop language, but also that they were incapable of learning language later on, and they were metally retarded as a result.

Obviously the dendrites necessary to establish langauge skills have to be established very early in life.

Only humans?

Didn't the orangutans learn that by observing humans?
Still, I don't doubt they have their own memes. But I don't think we could say a meme can be created without emerging initially from bodily processes - which would include our psyche, biology, physiology etc.

Thank for the replies everyone. Some interesting stuff there.

One reason why I started this was because some sociologists who claim behaviour is a "social construction" fail to trace back where the meme emerged from to begin with. It's true that many people just absorb memes and therefore a lot of their behaviour is a result of a social construction imprinted into their body. But all these memes have to initially emerge from someone - at some point in time scientists, philosophers, leaders, or whomever, created the original memes.

True. There are better examples of apes and monkeys imitating the behavior of other apes and monkeys.

Undoubtedly true.
