Powerful earthquake strikes Indonesian province of Papua

A POWERFUL earthquake has struck the Indonesian province of Papua.

US geologists said it was 7.0 in magnitude but other sources reported it as 7.2.

The quake struck at 6:41am (7.41am AEST), almost 250 kilometres west of the provincial capital Jayapura, at a depth of 52 kilometres, the US Geological Survey said.

In its initial estimate, the USGS said there was “a low likelihood of casualties and damage”.

It noted however that “the population in this region resides in structures that are vulnerable to earthquake shaking”.

There is no tsumani threat to the Australian mainland or territories, the Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre said.

The quake occurred inland underneath the Irian Jaya jungle.

The Earthquake-Report monitoring website said the area has “steep mountain ranges and its vegetation is rainforest, which means that the chance on dangerous landslides is real”.

Geoscience Australia on its website estimated the quake could be felt up to 1,523 kilometres from its epicentre and could have caused damage up to 122 kilometres away.

The region lies on the 4,000-kilometre-long Pacific Australia plate, which forms part of the “Ring of Fire”, a hotspot for seismic activity due to friction between tectonic plates.

Reports of second earthquake or tremor in southeast Queensland

TWO earthquakes have occurred off southeast Queensland this afternoon.
Geoscience Australia and the Bureau of Meteorology have confirmed a 5.7 magnitude earthquake has originated 131km off the Fraser Coast at 1.38pm.
Just over an hour later a second earthquake measuring 5.2 magnitude occurred at 2.46pm in the same area as the first earthquake.
The first quake was Queensland’s largest earthquake since 1918.
The quake struck at 1.38pm, at a depth of 10km, and was again felt from Hervey Bay into northern New South Wales.

“I was just sitting in my chair and it started shaking — I thought ‘my washing machine doesn’t shake that much’,” a Pimpama man said.
“Everyone went out on to the street to look around and see what happened,” he said.
Geoscience Australia says this afternoon’s first earthquake was more than 10 times the intensity than one recorded earlier this week.
“We’re looking at an earthquake which was 10-15 times bigger in terms of intensity,” a spokesman said.
Delays are expected on the Caboolture and Sunshine Coast train lines as trains run at a reduced speed in case of track damage caused by the quake.

THIS is now officially the world’s biggest category 5 typhoon.
Super Typhoon Soudelor developed into the world’s most powerful storm of the year Tuesday as it took aim at Japan, Taiwan and China after trashing the Northern Marianas.
The storm was roaring across the western Pacific Ocean packing wind gusts up to 220 miles per hour (354km/h) according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center which rated it a maximum category five.
It was stronger than Cyclone Pam, the previous strongest storm of 2015, which killed at least 15 people when it slammed into Vanuatu, also in the Pacific, five months ago.
No deaths have been attributed to Soudelor, but it left a trail of destruction across the Northern Marianas where acting governor Ralph Torres declared a “state of major disaster and significant emergency” after it struck late Sunday.
Nearly 400 people were packed in emergency shelters after Soudelor ripped roofs off houses and left residents without power, water and wastewater services.

“I’ve seen multiple primary power poles down; I’ve seen cars flipped over the road; I’ve seen lots of torn roofs,” John Hirsh, executive director of the American Red Cross in Saipan, told Pacific Daily News.
Damage was “extensive” across the island and there had been significant damage to public infrastructure, he said.
Many roads were impassable in Saipan — the Northern Marianas main island, the seat of government and hub of the local economy — while in the harbour at least three vessels were ripped from their moorings.

In Hagatna, on neighbouring Guam, the weather service warned boats to stay away from exposed reefs and beaches because of “hazardous surf” and “life threatening” rip currents.
It said Soudelor would continue to intensify as it swept across open water for the next 24 hours before starting to weaken.
It was expected to be down to category four or three by the time it hit southern Japan, Taiwan and China from late Thursday.
Tropical typhoons and cyclones typically form in the western Pacific between May and October with Pam the most destructive so far this year.
In addition to the fatalities in Vanuatu, about 75,000 people needed emergency shelter after their homes were destroyed and almost all food crops were wiped out.
Typhoon Maysak slammed into the Federated States of Micronesia in late March killing at least four people and leaving more than 5,000 in need of food, shelter and other emergency assistance.

Today, Scotland’s secretary of rural affairs, Richard Lochhead, announced a ban on growing genetically modified crops.

Scotland is to ban the growing of genetically modified crops, the country's rural affairs secretary has announced.
Richard Lochhead said the Scottish government was not prepared to "gamble" with the future of Scotland's £14bn food and drink sector.
He is to request that Scotland be excluded from any European consents for the cultivation of GM crops.
But farming leaders said they were disappointed by the move.
Mr Lochhead said the request for opt-outs from GM crop consent would cover an EU approved variety of genetically modified maize and six other GM crops that are awaiting authorisation.
He said that Scotland was known around the world for its "beautiful natural environment" and banning the growing of genetically modified crops would protect and further enhance its "clean, green status".
'Consumer backlash'
Mr Lochhead added: "There is no evidence of significant demand for GM products by Scottish consumers and I am concerned that allowing GM crops to be grown in Scotland would damage our clean and green brand, thereby gambling with the future of our £14bn food and drink sector.
"Scottish food and drink is valued at home and abroad for its natural, high quality which often attracts a premium price, and I have heard directly from food and drink producers in other countries that are ditching GM because of a consumer backlash."
The announcement was welcomed by Scottish Green MSP Alison Johnstone, who agreed that the cultivation of GM crops would harm the country's environment and reputation for high quality food and drink.
But she called on ministers to go further by challenging big retailers to improve their labelling to show whether meat, eggs and dairy come from animals fed on GM feed.
'Embracing biotechnology'
Scott Walker, chief executive of NFU Scotland, said he was disappointed that the Scottish government had decided that no GM crops should ever be grown in Scotland.
"Other countries are embracing biotechnology where appropriate and we should be open to doing the same here in Scotland," he said.
"These crops could have a role in shaping sustainable agriculture at some point and at the same time protecting the environment which we all cherish in Scotland."
Huw Jones, professor of molecular genetics at agricultural science group Rothamsted Research, said the announcement was a "sad day for science and a sad day for Scotland.
He said that GM crops approved by the EU were "safe for humans, animals and the environment".
