Scientists slow the speed of light

A team of Scottish scientists has made light travel slower than the speed of light.

They sent photons - individual particles of light - through a special mask. It changed the photons' shape - and slowed them to less than light speed.

The photons remained travelling at the lower speed even when they returned to free space.

The experiment is likely to alter how science looks at light.

The collaborators - from Glasgow and Heriot-Watt universities - are members of the Scottish Universities Physics Alliance. They have published their results in the journal Science Express.

The speed of light is regarded as an absolute. It is 186,282 miles per second in free space.

Light propagates more slowly when passing through materials like water or glass but goes back to its higher velocity as soon as it returns to free space again.

Or at least it did until now.

Two and a half years ago, the experimenters set out to see if they could slow down light just a little - and keep it moving more slowly.

In a laboratory at Glasgow university, Dr Jacquiline Romero, Dr Daniel Giovannini and colleagues built what amounts to a racetrack for photons, the individual particles of light.

Then they raced them in pairs. One photon they left in its normal state. The other photon was sent through a special mask.

The mask forced the photon to change its shape and travel slower than the speed of light.

Dr Romero explains: "After the mask, the photon is launched into a sort of racetrack about a metre in length.

"Then we take the time in which the unshaped photon finishes the racetrack, and the shaped photon's time as well, and then compare the two times."

If they had both been travelling at the speed of light it would have been a dead heat. But the re-shaped photon came in second.

Not by much - a few millionths of a metre - but it showed that it had not just been slowed by the mask, but had continued to travel at less than light speed even after it had returned to free space.

Light travelling at less than the speed of light. Whose bright idea was that?

It grew from a conversation between Prof Daniele Faccio at Heriot-Watt University and Prof Miles Padgett at Glasgow.

Prof Padgett says the crucial component is the mask - a software controlled liquid crystal device: "That mask looks a little bit like a bull's-eye target.

"And that mask patterns the light beam, and we show that it's the patterning of the light beam that slows it down.

"But once that pattern has been imposed - even now the light is no longer in the mask, it's just propagating in free space - the speed is still slow."

But hang on a minute. If a photon is a particle, how is it possible to impose a pattern on it?

It's because photons exist in the exotic and rather wonderful quantum realm, where the rules of the reassuringly solid world in which we live tend to lose their grip.

They exhibit what physicists call "wave-particle duality": they behave like both a wave and a particle. So you can send them round a racetrack two by two like particles, yet change the shape of one of them as if it was a wave.

Peloton
Complicated? Oh yes. Which is why the researchers say it might help to think of a bicycle race.

The peloton - the main bunch of riders - may be moving at a constant speed. But within the bunch an individual rider may be moving more slowly, dropping back for a rest or a drink.

Meanwhile other riders in the bunch are moving faster to get to the front.

The bunch is a beam of light, travelling at - yes - the speed of light. The riders are photons, travelling at their individual speeds.

For Dr Giovannini it's been a satisfying intellectual and experimental challenge: "It mostly comes from a question we asked ourselves two and a half years ago. We just kept working on it.

"It's really, really interesting. It's just one of those big, fundamental questions you may want to ask yourself at some point in the pub one night.

Prof Padgett says: "What makes our experiment different, and what has brought clarity to this, is that rather than looking at a light pulse which contains many, many, many photons we've reduced the experiment down to a single photon.

"So we measure the speed of a single photon as it propagates.

"And we find it's actually being slowed below the speed of light."

There are some practical implications. Light is used to make extremely precise measurements such as how far the Moon is from Earth.

A strange, flickering white blotch found on the dwarf planet Ceres by a NASA spacecraft has scientists scratching their heads.

The white spot on Ceres in a series of new photos taken on Jan. 13 by NASA's Dawn spacecraft, which is rapidly approaching the round dwarf planet in the asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. But when the initial photo release on Monday (Jan. 19), the Dawn scientists gave no indication of what the white dot might be.

"Yes, we can confirm that it is something on Ceres that reflects more sunlight, but what that is remains a mystery," Marc Rayman, mission director and chief engineer for the Dawn mission, told Space.com in an email.

In New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency, called out the National Guard and said he may order everyone to stay put later tonight, as governors in Connecticut and Massachusetts had already done.

In Philadelphia, Mayor Michael Nutter declared a snow emergency starting at 6 p.m. ET Monday. Cars left parked on snow emergency routes will be towed and owners ticketed, he said.

The first big storm of the year may drop up to 3 feet of snow on Boston and New York before it ends Tuesday, with freezing rain and strong wind gusts possibly reaching 55 to 65 mph. Blizzard and winter storm warnings have been issued from Maryland through Maine and into Canada.
Up to 58 million people could be put into the deep freeze.

"I want everyone to understand that we are facing -- most likely --
one of the largest snowstorms in the history of this city," de Blasio said.

That's saying something. In 2006, 26.9 inches of snow fell, topping the 25.8-inches of snow that fell in December 1947.

While the worst of the weather isn't expected to hit until late Monday into Tuesday, according to CNN forecasters, thousands of flights already have been canceled for Monday and Tuesday, Flightaware.com said.

Between 50% and 70% of flights have already been canceled Monday at New York area airports, with even more likely Tuesday, said Pat Foye, executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

American Airlines said it would suspend operations in Philadelphia, Boston and New York late Monday afternoon.

"We plan to resume operations as soon as it is safe to do so," airline spokeswoman Andrea Huguely said.

United Airlines has already canceled all Tuesday flights at Newark, LaGuardia and JFK, as well as Boston and Philadelphia, company spokeswoman Mary Ryan said.

The major U.S. airlines are offering fee-free rebooking of flights to and from the Northeast on Monday and Tuesday.

Amtrak plans to operate a normal Monday schedule but may re-evaluate later in the day.

The next LED revolution is upon us, and it is ultraviolet

TOKYO -- It took a decade of work and the help of two Nobel laureates, but industrial pump manufacturer Nikkiso is finally gearing up for the mass production of deep ultraviolet light-emitting diodes.

These deep UV LEDs emit even shorter wavelengths of light than blue LEDs, and they have promising applications. Nikkiso envisions applications for its deep UV LEDs in three broad fields.

   First is the environmental field, where the sterilizing effects of deep UV radiation can be put to use disinfecting water and sewage. This is already done using mercury lamps, but the new LEDs have many advantages: They are smaller and can run on lower voltage, around 5-7 volts. They are far more durable, lasting more than 10,000 hours, compared to around 3,000 to 5,000 hours for mercury lamps. Finally, they do not use toxic mercury.

   The second field is medicine, where Nikkiso anticipates a wide range of applications in addition to the sterilization of medical instrumentation.

   One example is dermatology, where selective dosing with different wavelengths of deep UV radiation can be used as a form of light therapy to treat skin disorders.

   Another example is the measurement of the purity and density of proteins and DNA by combining the LEDs with photodetectors.

   And Nikkiso has already incorporated the LEDs into its kidney dialysis machines as a way to check for the elimination of waste materials from the blood.

   Industrial applications are the third promising field. Used with UV-hardening resins for bonding and coating processes, the LEDs can improve the efficiency of the production line because they can reach stable output much faster than mercury lamps, which take more time to warm up.

   But even as the company works to propose applications in these fields, it also intends to utilize the deep UV LEDs in its own products.

   Together with its pump technologies, Nikkiso has developed a module that can be fitted to food machinery to sterilize water on the move.

The hard road

It was clear from the start -- Nikkiso first began developing deep UV LEDs in 2006 -- that it would be difficult to grow crystals of uniform properties in order to mass-produce high-quality versions of the elements.

For help and guidance, the company turned to Isamu Akasaki of Meijo University and Hiroshi Amano of Nagoya University, both of whom shared the 2014 Nobel Prize in physics for their work on blue LEDs with Shuji Nakamura of University of California, Santa Barbara.

   "We doggedly pursued the research, just like these pioneers," recalled Shigeo Maruo, who heads the company's R&D subsidiary Nikkiso Giken.

   With the guidance of the two future Nobel laureates, Maruo and the staff at Nikkiso Giken fine-tuned their mass-production technologies and began selling samples of their deep UV LEDs in 2012.

   Nikkiso completed a 2.2 billion yen ($18.5 million) production facility in Ishikawa Prefecture this past June that is now in trial operation. Full-scale mass production of the LEDs is expected to start in April.

   "We're confident of the performance of these LEDs," Maruo said, "and the next step now is to ascertain customer needs."

   With rivals like Asahi Kasei also developing deep UV LEDs, this nascent market is likely to see intense competition in the years ahead.

   For Nikkiso, that means continuing to boost performance and explore new fields for its deep UV LEDs.

   "To lead a market," Maruo said, "you always need to be thinking about the next move."

Israel Launches Artillery Strikes Into Syria, Downs Syrian Jet

After two rockets from the Syrian side of the border allegedly landed in the Israeli occupied territory of the Golan Heights on Tuesday, Israel has launched an immediate “response” of artillery fire into Syria.

The “exchange” comes only a week after an illegal Israeli military air assault inside Syria that resulted in the deaths of top Iranian and Hezbollah commanders who were in the country for the purposes of advising anti-ISIS forces as well as investigating the coordination taking place between ISIS, al-Qaeda, and Israel.

As AFP reports,
Israeli military spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner said Tuesday's fire "appeared to be intentional." He declined to comment on whether the fire may have been connected to last week's airstrike.

A message on Lerner's Twitter account said that Israel "responded with artillery towards the positions that launched the attack."

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel views the rockets "very seriously" and that it will retaliate to attacks.

"Those that play with fire will get fire," Netanyahu said at a memorial for International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

The military said sirens sounded in communities in the Golan Heights earlier Tuesday. It said that it had evacuated and closed a popular ski resort following the strike. No injuries were reported.

Liquid water apparently flowed on the surface of the huge asteroid Vesta briefly in the relatively recent past, a surprising new study suggests.

"Nobody expected to find evidence of water on Vesta. The surface is very cold and there is no atmosphere, so any water on the surface evaporates," study lead author Jennifer Scully, a postgraduate researcher at UCLA, said in a NASA statement. "However, Vesta is proving to be a very interesting and complex planetary body."
