Lava Flows Extremely Close, Fogo Volcano Eruption, 2014

After crossing tremendously hot lava deposits it was possible for a short time to get really close to the lava flows of Fogo volcano near their source where they are at their hottest and most fluid. The ground was so hot that the soles of my shoes were smelling of burning rubber and the feet of my tripod melted.
Further downstream, the flows sadly destroyed the settlement of Portela.

12/19/2014 -- New Hawaii lava flow set to hit Pahoa Marketplace -- Evacuations underway

New up close video of the Hawaiian #punalavaflow released by the County of Hawaii.

The new outbreak of lava is coming from a volcanic fissure which opened on the flanks of Pu'u' O'o crater (part of the Kilauea volcanic complex), the newest flow has been moving up to 250 yards per day towards the Northeast -- and is heading in the general direction of the town of Pahoa, Hawaii marketplace.

Currently the flow is less than 1 mile North of Pahoa.

I've been doing my best to keep up with the USGS / Hawaii Volcano Observatory / Civil Defense alerts.. see my website for an update here:
