About 50 Sri Lankan asylum seekers are refusing to get off their boat which is stranded next to an Indonesian island.

The boat ran out of diesel last week and had to be towed to the Mentawi islands.

It is one of two boats, carrying 93 Sri Lankan asylum seekers, which had to be brought to safety there.

The passengers of one boat agreed to come ashore, but 53 people are demanding to be given 2,000 litres of fuel so they can continue to Christmas Island.

The regional head of immigration, Elfinur, says authorities cannot give them petrol because that would amount to participating in people smuggling and would also violate Indonesian immigration law.

He says the asylum seekers still have some food on board and he is happy to give them more food.

He says they have been offered temporary accommodation in a town hall but they are refusing to leave the boat.

There is no need to defend our boarder against people who can legitimately come to Australia, legitimate defence is a very different matter.

There is no illegality involved in refugees looking for assistance.

There is no need to defend our boarder against people who can legitimately come to Australia, legitimate defence is a very different matter.

thats why we are now increasing it to cover Indonesian borders

Nope, any humanitarian aid must not compromise the General public welfare of Australian commonwealth citizens any other consideration must be secondary...Refuge rights dont take priority over common Law rights,that is just a legal fact - we are a commonwealth..The ALP & Greens are communists who tirelessly cease to deny the general public welfare of commonwealth citizens and they use every excuse in the book to do it from world hunger, over population, refugees...its all our fault and a reason they must subvert common law rights for foreign interests...

Insiders presenter Barrie Cassidy says the media has failed to hold Opposition Leader Tony Abbott to account for his prevarications on asylum seekers and the carbon tax.

When Jon Faine interviewed Tony Abbott on ABC's 774 on Tuesday, something unusual happened.

The Opposition Leader's careless use of words was actually challenged.

Abbott, discussing the asylum seekers issue, asserted:

Frankly, we've had 22,000 illegal arrivals, almost 400 illegal boats ...

Faine responded:

They're not illegal. Tony Abbott, do I need to remind you that the use of words in this is critical?
They are not illegal arrivals.
There is nothing illegal about seeking asylum when you are a refugee

Abbott:

Tony Abbott did not further dispute the point.

Like an errant school kid, he seemed to accept the admonishment. Yet within 24 hours, he was again referring to asylum seekers as illegals.

Nobody in the media pulled him up.
He knew they wouldn't

They rarely do.
