Dirty power stations will stay - another failure

Talks on closing down some of the country's highest polluting power stations have collapsed, with the Federal Government saying it could not reach an agreement on compensation.

The Government has been negotiating contracts for closure with five power generators - three of them in Victoria - as part of its carbon tax package.

But Resources Minister Martin Ferguson says the talks have failed to agree on the appropriate level of compensation, and the negotiations have been cancelled.

"There remains a material gap between the level of compensation generators have sought and what the Government is prepared to pay," Mr Ferguson has said in a statement.

The Government was hoping to close down 2,000 megawatts of carbon-intensive power generation by 2020, although it never disclosed how much money it was willing to put on the table.

The five generators that participated in the negotiations include: Alinta Energy in South Australia, HRL in Victoria, Hazelwood power station in Victoria, RATCH-Australia in Queensland, and the TRUenergy plant in Yallourn, Victoria.

Maybe labor thought they would get to do it for stuff all because they would have the feel good factor in helping the redistribution of wealth, um I mean the planet.

Maybe if the carbon tax wasn't handed over to the morons to put through the pokies, the Dullard government could afford to replace a few dodgy power stations.

Who would have thought this was going to be another dullard sh1t-fight, these morons couldn't organise a root in a brothel with a hand full of $50s

I guess saving the planet isn't as important as we may have been led to believe.

Good to see you are in complete agreement with Christine Milne and the Greens

not sure what the complaints are for ... the goverment always said they wouldn't just pay any amount to buy back the power stations .... it seems the power companies were trying to milk them dry ...

I bet if Gillard had over paid these companies you would all be whinging about wasting tax payer funds ....

Or are you all upset that all those job losses you were whinging about when she first mentioned the policy over a year ago will now not go ahead?

So where's the problem? The carbon tax will continue to put the squeeze on those power stations until they're priced out of existence and forced to shut. WITHOUT compensation.

EDIT: Here. Ferguson says as much if you care to read between his lines:
