Given that Gillard has had to do a massive policy backflip over the issue of illegal immigrants, and had to adopt a Coalition policy no less, I am predicting a jump in the polls for the Coalition by as much as five points and a similar drop in the polls by the ALP. I also reckon Abbott will increase his lead as preferred PM over Gillard.

I am disappointed that the Coalition's vote didn't drop at all. Labor gained ground but it was at sthpppthe expense the Greens and others. Labor needs to gain votes from the Coalition.

No. Labor needs to gain the large chunk out there of (so far) uncommitted voters. Some of the Lieberal supporters would get with the program once the ball started rolling.

But how many are uncommitted? Others and uncommitted isn't the same thing. Like I said there are good signs but still a way to go yet. I remain hopeful that they can lead the polls again soon, with the election now literally a year away, plus or minus a few days.

I haven't seen the latest Newspoll and don't have time now to go dig it out, but from memory there was a chunk of something like 10-15% listed as undecided in the primary vote. The challenge for all parties is to make those people decide.

Margaret Thatcher won the 1979 election. But by December 1980 her job approval rating fell to 23%, the lowest for any PM in modern history. She won a third term in 1990.

What was so good about it? People said the same about Anna Bligh's performance after the floods and OK at how that turned out.

True enough. Well soon we will see if we are all Queenslanders now Grin Fortunately people have the added benefit of seeing exactly how Queensland and NSW are panning out under Conservative rulers; but wouldn't surprise me any if you turn out to be right.

Question: Does anyone know if the poll was taken before or after the Houston report was released? Was the poll taken before or after legislation was passed to enable offshore processing in Nauru & Manus Island?
