Greens are cold and cynical

NSW Labor secretary Sam Dastyari has attacked the Greens for accusing the ALP of having no values, saying the party is "bordering on loony".

The Labor powerbroker last weekend called for his party to no longer automatically favour the Greens in any future preference negotiations.

Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young responded by saying Labor would be a sell-out if it handed the coalition control of the Senate.

Speaking on Tuesday, Mr Dastyari repeated claims the Greens were operating in their own self-interest.

"These people aren't our friends, they don't share our ideology, they don't share our values, they don't share our history," he told Macquarie Radio.

"I think for too long the Labor party, particularly in NSW, has really been giving the Greens a free ride. A lot of the Green agenda isn't in the interest of Labor voters."

Mr Dastyari, whose branch holds its conference in Sydney this weekend, said the Liberals, Nationals and Labor should no longer remain silent about the Greens' agenda.

"Sarah Hanson-Young ... started jumping up and down on radio saying `oh there's no values, they show there's no values'.

"These are the type of people that if you don't have their values, if you don't agree with them, you're automatically discounted in the Australian political debate," he said.

"The biggest problem with the Greens isn't their aspirational policy agenda which is, you know, bordering on loony in half a dozen different areas, it's this refusal to compromise....

"You're not dealing with a bunch of kind of harmless hippies from the seventies anymore, these are a cold-hearted ... political party."

The Greens are impossible to negotiate with and their positions are all unreasonable.

I hate to SAY it, but the Australian Labor Party is NOW a party that has "LOST IT'S WAY"

ALP threat carries high risks

THE threat by ALP leaders to direct Labor preferences to the Liberals ahead of the Greens would have no impact in the House of Representatives. But it might cost the Greens a Senate seat or two - and give the Coalition control of the Senate.

If they mean it, it's a high-risk threat. Like them or loathe them, the Greens are Labor's ally. In 2010, 45 of Labor's 72 MPs won their seats on Green preferences. In the whole of Queensland, Western Australia, Tasmania and both territories, every Labor MP got there on Greens preferences.

For Labor, the risk is that it could give the Coalition control of the Senate. Ultimately it has to decide which party is its real enemy - and which its ally.

As a Greens supporter - in the Senate - I find Labor's behaviour APPALLING

I will be voting "below the line" - as will many OTHERS

The attacks on the Greens are an attack by proxy on Julia Gillard. She has defined her Prime Ministership through an alliance with the Greens.

Undermining that alliance and attacking Greens values is an indirect swipe at the alliance and Gillard's judgement.

Julia Gillard - twice selected, never elected.

We're still paying for the Whitlam Government.

I have found the Greens to be A cold, heartless and opportunistic group who managed to replace "help the needy" with "Save the Planet" as the case of social conscience.  This was always the 18th, 19th century scam to ignore the plight of the slum dwellers on Europe and an excuse to deport them to the new world.

Yeah, she's been well and truly caught with her pants (or skirt) down over the Labor hierarchy's attacks on the Greens. She's looking more and more like the General who wasn't told the war has already started.

The sad truth is that the Greens would be quite happy to save the planet even if it meant the extinction of mankind.

so you dont like labor beating up onthe greens? do you even understand why? Gilalrd gave them the carbon tax and what have they given in return? NOTHING. they dont compromise and when Gillard wants the favour returned, the say no. thats why the libs and labor may end up preferencing each other to get rid of thier toxic influence so they can govern on behalf of the PEOPLE and not the parrots of australia,
