Greens Say Change Was Simply A Cost Saving.

Sole parents 'demonised' in jobs plan.    Sad
May 30, 2012

ALMOST half the single parents who will have their welfare payments cut to encourage them to get jobs under a budget measure are already in the workforce, a Senate committee was told yesterday.

The Gillard government announced in the budget that single parents would lose their parenting payments when their youngest child turned eight, while partnered parents would lose their benefits when their youngest child turned six. People who have started receiving the parenting payment since 2006 already face these conditions, but those who were already receiving the payment in 2006 are able to keep the payment until their youngest child turns 16. If parents fail to find work after the change comes into effect in July 2013, they would receive the Newstart allowance, which is about $60 a week less than the single parenting payment. The change is expected to save more than $685 million over four years.    Huh

Officials from the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations told a Senate hearing yesterday that of 122,630 people expected to be affected by the change, 55,600 are already reporting earnings from work.

Greens senator Rachel Siewert said the figures showed the change was not about encouraging parents to enter or re-enter the workforce as the government had claimed, but was simply a cost saving.    Sad

She said the change demonised single parents by implying they did not want to work, and would reduce their income, making them and their children more vulnerable.    Sad

I have been a PPS dependant and i have no problem with this. I studied while my children were young and i needed to be at home, i then took part time work as they got older and have now been working full time for quite a while in a job my studies qualified me for. I saw far to many single parents doing nothing to further their futures but were always happy to have a good whinge that they didn't get enough to live on. This is long over due, being a single parent is not a lifestyle option and the government should not support it as such.

Let us give credit where credit is due.  The Australian Greens support a fair and just increase, of $50 a week in the New start  ( No start ) allowance.    Wink
