Ultra High Voltage Direct Current(UHVDC, or UHV for short!) is being built in China and Australia doesn't even know it exists.

Hey don't challenge the coal lobby and their political puppets with logic DRAH. You will be called a CIA agent by their boss, Clive Palmer.

Coal is king in these parts, even if it forces up the cost of living for ever.

It’s about power transmission, not coal, myopic moron.

Considering……..

"Ultra-high voltage power transmission (UHVPT) projects, however, have met many obstacles, as some doubt whether the technology is mature enough and can bring about economic benefit"

Perhaps the smart thing to do is wait? We don’t have the power consumption and under supply issues that China has.

That can be used to transmit geothermal hotrock electricity from northern South Australia ... and so build solar thermal in conjunction and so use the same lines.

All in competition with the old parties' puppet masters.

i.e Clive Palmer

Well I guess when we are producing enough geothermal hot-rock electricity in Northern SA we’ll have a problem.

Or do you think we should just tip a few billion into a dream, by providing power lines that may not do the job?

Doesn’t Tim “Big Green” Flannery have investments in geo-thermal?

Seems to be a lot of people these days with a huge stake in being green and ensuring the ongoing scaremongering that goes hand in hand with AGW. The new puppet masters of the gullible.

MOST AUSTRALIANS DON'T EVEN KNOW HVDC EXISTS, LET ALONG UHVDC.

IF THEY DID THEN RENEWABLE ENERGY WOULD BE MORE POPULAR AS IT WOULD ACTAULLY BE SEEN TO BE VIABLE.

SO WE HAVE SUPPOSEDLY FREE MARKETS  BLIGHTED BY A NON-FREE FLOW OF INFORMATION THUS MAKING THE SYSTEM ONE OF UN-FREE MARKETS!

do ya get it yet mate: there aint a free market in the world because the consumer is not operating with full knowledge of what is available.

I think we should just keep digging up and burning fossil fuels until they run out and by then it will be someone else's problem

Sounds like...

"Ultra-high voltage power transmission (UHVPT) projects, however, have met many obstacles, as some doubt whether the technology is mature enough and can bring about economic benefit"

It would be a good idea to wait.

Considering how hard it is to get renewable energy projects off the ground, you might be right.

We've been touted as a top destination for solar for over a decade.

Yes it does seem to be a very closely guarded secret, I had to type into google and then select the wiki page before I found any information on it; including the various issues surrounding the use of UHVDC transmission system.

Damn you personal responsibility, when will the government learn it is their responsibility to personally provide me with all the information I don't need, just in case I feel like knowing it.

This may surprise you, but Australia already has a HVDC line. "Basslink" from Victoria to Tasmania provides a 400kV DC power connection rated at 500MW.

The UHVDC projects in China, India and South Africa operate at 800kV and 1MV.

The advantage with using such high voltages is that a lot of power can be transferred with lower loss and using thinner conductors.  Other HVDC lines have been operating for decades.
