Fair Work Australia has found more than 180 breaches of Health Services Union rules in its investigation into the troubled union.
The latest revelations have been made in a statement by Fair Work Australia's general manager Bernadette O'Neill, which was released today.
Ms O'Neill says the investigation reveals an organisation that abjectly failed to have adequate governance arrangements in place to protect union members' funds against misuse.
"Substantial funds were, in my view, spent inappropriately including on escort services, spousal travel, and excessive travel and hospitality expenditure," she said.
She says the contraventions involve the HSU national office along with two current officials, a former auditor, and one former official.
Ms O'Neill says the majority of contraventions relate to the former official but will not name the officials concerned for privacy reasons.
Fair Work sent the results of its three year inquiry to the Director of Public Prosecutions which has now handed the document to the Victorian and New South Wales police.
Labor MP Craig Thomson was the union's national secretary before entering Parliament. He has been accused of misusing union funds when he was the union's national secretary, but denies any wrongdoing.
