Compulsory Voting
Apr 20th, 2012 at 8:35am

Really. I think its stupid. The reason (i assume) that it was made compulsory in the first place was because we had a low population. Now we dont. Theres over 20mil of us isnt there? Well what can we do about this? Can we organise a petition or something? Is there some way to make them discuss this in parliament? What can we do?

It shouldn't be compulsory to vote.

It's a paradox.

Defeats the purpose of of being a democracy.

If you don't care to vote then the crappy Govt should not have the power to force you by stealing money off you.  They steal enough in taxes already. Angry

If you are part of the minority that pays the majority of tax it doesn't matter....you will always be unrepresented unless of course the majority of dropkicks stop voting which they probably would because they don't get off their arses to work... Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy so they'd likely do the same with voting......

Non-compulsory voting....a good thing  Smiley

I will probably never vote again. Put it this way, things would have to change drastically for me to actually want to help a certain pollie get into power.

NO
to compulsory voting.

If the government haven't got the guts to give us a choice then they're not worth voting for. They know they'd be lucky to get a 10% turn out if they took the compulsory away. They'll never be game. Everyone you talk to hates both parties at the moment so they certainly wouldn't get much joy from the public if they made voting optional.

There's not many places in the world that have compulsory voting these days.

Get some guts Aussie pollies! Be democratic.

Russia is more democratic than Australia.
They don't have compulsory voting or internet censorship.

This is a very immoderate proposal that would increase class division and disenfranchisement with the decision making process for people already under represented and victims of diseased corruption in Government.  It would be totally irresponsible and socially exclusive. Cool Cool Cool

The thing I love about compulsory voting is that it stops the activists like greens and lefties as a whole to completely over take politics, because the sleeping majority would let it happen (as seen overseas).

When it is compulsory, the sleeping majority are made to wake up for a day.

I agree with your last sentence. A government needs to be validated by the people.

How does compulsory voting do that? Plenty of "lefties" dont want to vote either.

In Australia, the lefty extremists, the greenies are far more activist than centre and right.

If you are not an activist, then obviously you are not part of the activist pool I was talking about.  Cheesy

Ahhh. I never really thought of myself as an "activist" until just now. You see my stance of not voting is an action. In fact my starting of this thread is an action.

Besides since Keating there hasnt been any "left" ppl to vote for. They have all moved to the "right" so far that it is considered "center".

Off topic I know but what put me off voting in australia was the futility. We have had 2 PMs now that just "stepped in"when they werent voted for then there was the whole Whitlam thing. Its a farce. I want no part of the farce that is BS voting. Like anything we say matters.

“I don’t care what the people want. I will do what I think is right.”  - remember who said that? Yeah Bush of course but his minime had to say it too.

A compulsory referendum on whether voting should be voluntary or not.   Undecided

They were voted for.  All perfectly legitimate.

The general public does not elect the PM.  This is a good thing.

This is Australia, not the US.  The PM and POTUS are completely different.

Your vote was not a futile effort: you voted for your local member.  Is your local member still in his/her seat?

What would happen if compulsory voting was dropped?

We would probably end like the US where a large portion of voters are motivated by strange ideas, and the more normal people do not bother to vote.

Are US politicians better than Australian politicians?
