Aussies support NBN by two to one

AUSTRALIANS supporting the high speed national broadband network (NBN) exceed opponents by more than two to one, a new survey shows.

The Essential Research survey released today showed 56 per cent of 1042 respondents were in favour of the NBN, up from 54 per cent when the question was previously asked in April 2011.

As well, support for the $35.9 billion project has risen by eight percentage points from 48 per cent in February last year.

Some 25 per cent of those surveyed opposed the NBN, down from 31 per cent in February 2011.

The biggest supporters of the NBN were Labor voters at 80 per cent, with Greens voters on 77 per cent.

While 42 per cent of Coalition voters were in favour of the network, 43 per cent were not.

The government-owned enterprise, NBN Co, is in charge of rolling out fibre-optic cable to deliver high-speed broadband services to 93 per cent of Australia's 13 million homes, schools and businesses by 2021.

Fixed wireless technology will provide high-speed internet to four per cent of premises, and the remaining three per cent will be supplied by two satellites to areas outside the reach of the cable and wireless networks.

The online survey was conducted between February 15 and 19, 2012.

No, if you assume all of the 19 like it, then it would be 3:1 in favour.

If you assume they all don't like it, then it would be 56:44 in favour.

If you assume they split 50:50, then it would still be about 2:1 in favour.

I can see where $40bn can be better spent to be honest...I am wondering how much extra will be spent on rectifying all the mistakes that usually follow with anything this govt has done so far...

wasnt there something about satellites..being outsourced.. at huge cost...for those that choose to live out in the wild.

It may be conducted online, but it's an invitation-only randomised poll, conducted in the same way as a phone poll. You get an email from Essential, inviting to to take part in the poll/survey. It's not like a newspaper/forum online poll where anyone visiting the website can vote.

The NBN is 93% fibre to the premises, 4% LTE/4G fixed-wireless and 3% satellite, to achieve 100% population coverage. Of the $36.9bn capex of the NBN, the satellite portion (ie: 2x sats, launching them and the groundstations) will cost $1.5-2bn.

The NBN currently run an interim satellite service, using leased space on existing satellites. This provides 6Mbps speeds to a maximum of 48,000 premises. The final NBN satellite service will provide 12Mbps speeds to up to 200,000 premises.

The NBN Co did indeed recently sign the $600M contract for the supply of those satellites, which Malcolm Turnbull of course complained about, incorrectly claiming that the NBN could use existing satellites instead.
