The young boy goes to exit the Melbourne shop, but a few words from the man who approaches from the street convinces him to hang onto his sister and head back inside.

The man is a registered child sex offender with a history of indecent assaults on children.

Nine News has filmed him over the past week walking the streets getting drunk, starting fights and approaching young children.

The man, who Nine News has chosen not to name [is that right?], was sent to a facility for sex offenders with a mental disability for two years.

But he was transferred to a prison cell after he allegedly bashed a female staff member.

When his 39 days on remand were up, the man was deemed too dangerous to return to the facility, so he was released into the community.

Forty-eight hours after the footage was taken he was arrested and charged with loitering in a public place and trying to procure a child under 16 for sex.

Melbourne Nine News tells the full story tonight at 6pm AEDT.
