England crashes to defeat to Pakistan spinners
Jan 29th, 2012 at 12:32pm

Left-arm spinner Abdul Rehman took a career best 6-25 to help Pakistan humble England by 72 runs in the second Test in Abu Dhabi, to giving Pakistan unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

The 31-year-old twice took two wickets in successive overs to dent England's chase after Andrew Strauss's side was set a 145-run target on a weary fourth-day Abu Dhabi Stadium pitch.

England was all out for 72 - its lowest total against Pakistan in all Tests.

Rehman's effort overshadowed Monty Panesar's 6-62, in his first Test for England in 30 months, which finished Pakistan's second innings at 214 in the morning.

This is England's first series defeat after being unbeaten in its previous nine since a loss to the West Indies in early 2009 - a sequence which saw it rise to world No.1 in the Test rankings in August.

Pakistan won the first Test in Dubai by 10 wickets. The third Test will also be played in Dubai, from Friday.

That is two nill in a three test series. England simply cannot play spin. This has been their big problem for a long time. Pity we do not have any really top spinners at the moment. We must hope Lyon will learn and grow over the next two years.

Another titanic struggle. Pakistan out for 99 and england 6/104 lead by 5 runs. What a game. They are claiming to have the best bowling attacks in the world, i would think they are funny pitches. I have never known the POMS to have a great attack for more than a couple of seasons. Then they just go to pieces.

You could have a point about the pitches Nairbe???

Immediate impressions were that England had bowled well and Pakistan batted especially poorly on a perfectly feasible pitch of decent pace, with just occasional seam movement.

But that premise looked ropy as the reply stumbled to seven for two before tea.

But Pietersen was to become the eighth lbw victim of the day, and world-record 34th for any three-match series.

OH those LBW's can raise an eyebrow or two but the ones i have seen replayed do seem fair enough. Maybe the bounce is a little so so.
Day Two the POMs out for 141 and Pakistan 2/120 at tea. This is really a great series for Pakistan. Only the second wicketless session in the series. Can not help myself just love to see the POMs struggle.

Pakistan 2/222 at stumps. Could be a great run chase to come by England. With the pitch dying and the game not going long enough for it to start to crumble for the spinners i would think Pakistan will need 300+ to be able to pressure the POMs.

Thanks Nairbe....I find myself backing Pakistan to beat the POMES and send them home in disgrace.....I think the POMES are arrogant in victory and do not take defeat well.....Something I did not like in the past Australian sides!!!

You do realise that the whole "Prisoner Of Mother England" thing as for why we call them Poms is pure nonsense?

We haven't been calling them Poms for that long. Maybe 120 years max and many decades after the convict transport thing ended.

People just like explaining away the etymology of common words by thinking of acronyms. In the vast majority of cases they are simply wrong.

DAY OF GLORY

[size=12]http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-02-06/pakistan-whitewashes-england/3814502?section=sport

The Pommies have bit the dust with a three nill white wash Cry Cry Cry Cry OH yes my heart bleeds bucket loads.

The big questions now are can Pakistan do it on the more bouncy wickets of England, SA and Aus or is it a flash in the pan, and secondly can we get Lyon and another spinner up for the next Ashes. I would think the development of spinners would be job NO:1 as the Poms simply cannot play spin. The other good news is that Swann looked ordinary on a turning pitch. /size

So pakistan swept the top-ranked nation, and last time aus played pakistan we drew with them 1-1.  Therefore australia is the equal number 1 test nation.
