How can a Hard Right Premier help reduce gun drive by shootings, when he in in the pocket of the Gun Lobby.
Just days after the Shooters Party’s support of the government’s public sector wages legislation, the government has opened up more than 140 State Forests for recreational hunting for an unprecedented 10 years. Legislation brought before parliament by the Shooters Party could see a relaxing of regulations regarding air rifles.
Greens NSW MP David Shoebridge said:
“This last minute Friday declaration opening up over 140 state forests open to recreational hunters for an unprecedented 10 years is a clear pay off for the Shooters’ Party support for the government’s public sector wages bill.
“Minister Hodgkinson did not invite public submissions on the proposal. Instead it appears that the prospect of 10 years of blood sports in our state forests was left open as an inducement for the Shooters to sign up to the government’s radical IR laws.
“We have to ask what else the Shooters Party has secured for their ongoing support of Barry O’Farrell’s regime in the Upper House.
“The Shooters Party introduced the Firearms Amendment Bill into parliament last week. The aim of this bill is clearly to foster a gun culture in NSW similar to that in the United States.
“Some of the most worrying aspects of the bill include putting air rifles in the hands of inexperienced children, and exempting air rifles from having to be registered.
“Air rifles are deadly weapons. They can kill a bison. Pictures of the wounds they have inflicted on humans is horrifying.
“Unlike the Shooters Party, the Greens do not want an unknown and unregulated number of deadly firearms in circulation in NSW.
“The Shooters also plan to change the law to leave guns in the hands of people subject to Domestic Violence Orders. This is an entirely unwelcome development which runs counter to national gun reforms,” Mr Shoebridge said.
If passed, the Firearms Amendment Bill 2011 will:
Remove the obligation of people who have lost their firearms license (e.g. because of domestic violence order or apprehended violence order) to immediately surrender their weapons to police.
Allow children to have ready access to air rifles without a need for a permit.
Allow a person to own purchase air rifles without restrictions.
Ease safety regulations on shooting clubs and firearms sellers.
Allow guns and ammunition in National Parks.
