Annual Global Carbon Emissions = 29,321M tonnes in 2011

Global forecast annual increase@2% = 586.4M tonnes for 2012

Net effect of an Australian carbon tax = ??? no ones bothered to work it out, but let's be very generous and say a once off drop of 5% = 21.85M tonnes.

Net Result: Global increase of 564.6M tonnes year one.

So what exactly is an Australian carbon tax meant to achieve in terms of global emissions ? Have I missed something? Or is it just a revenue raiser?

Somebody please help me, the pollies and the press are still having too much fun playing with the skeptics to do any real work.

You don't believe in complex systems so there is no point talking to you!

You heard what Chinas doing lately... it's all a rich tapestry!!!

Another cost comparison:

The 8.619 million tonnes of carbon emissions we will stop can be offset by planting 196 square KM of forest. At $2 per seedling and 2500 trees per hectare, thats about $98M. Compare that to the $11.5Bn we will pay for the carbon tax and the negative impact on the economy.

If they are going to go ahead with the tax and are serious about this, they could take the $11.5Bn and use it to plant 100 times the 196sqkm and viola, were carbon neutral for the next century.

Two problems with trees:
- You are going to run out of space eventually to plant them.
- You are taking up productive farmland when planting them.
- They only temporarily store carbon for 100 years or so. Decay or burning releases the co2 they store.
- One decent fire, and your storage is stuffed.

Trees do not solve the problem. Only feel good things for greenies.

- also the fact that as the global temperature increases, more and more forests will switch from being a net carbon sink to being a net carbon emitter.
