Hands Off Our Public Transport Barry !!!

Sydney Ferries to be franchised

The NSW government has called for expressions of interest to run a franchised Sydney Ferries, with plans to contract out the operation of the iconic services by the end of next year.

NSW Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian on Wednesday announced the government would follow through with its long held promise to franchise out the services, and called for registrations of interests by May 31.

Under the franchise model, the government would retain ownership of the ferries and control over fare structures, routes and services.

However, one operator would run and maintain the ferries, with the aim of improving and expanding current services.

"We do have the best harbour in the world, we deserve the best services that match that," Ms Berejiklian told reporters at state parliament.

"Under our model, we will allow a private sector operator to come in, operate and maintain the vessels.

"However, the routes, the fare structure and the vessels will (be retained) by the government."

Slippy slop, will not be long until government sells off completely.

In a Climate Change/Peak Oil World, we most protect, modernize and grow our public transport while keeping it in Australian public owners.

I tend to agree with you and am a believer in public assets but i recon Barry knows that there is not a hope in hell of the government running the ferries competently into the future. Privately owned and run ferry services will be on time and budget unlike the ferry system now.
On the whole Barry will introduce the changes that the last three labor leaders wanted but were not allowed to do by the unions at conference. Labor are in deep trouble in this country until they rid themselves of union control.

Conclusions, you are jumping to them.

Makes sense to contract out the management and maintenance of them, whilst still maintaining ownership.

Nothing in the article remotely suggests a sell off.

Take your paranoia elsewhere.

Isnt there a canning of a green car fund you should be complaining about instead?

As the people did not rise against the previous government in spite of the breathtaking incompetence they displayed for 16 years, I doubt they will rise over this.

I an generally against the privatisation of public assets, however I will wait and see on this one. Will the inevitable higher costs result in more efficiency?

Like selling off the power system???

The article contains NO mention of privatisation...just a different management and maintence system...which the ferry system desperately needs btw...

The fares, and scheduling remain government controlled...as does ownership of the boats themselves..Hopefully they intend to extend this to the bus and train sectors as well..because a shake up is long over due

I am not and have not been mad of the Greens result in NSW

Extra seats in both houses and an increase in the primary vote ... this when the catholic brains trust and unAustralian tried to undermine the Greens vote.

The evidence of public asset sell off by conservatives ... history !!!
