Mateship,
A Fair Go,
Being Neighbourly,
Treating others as you want to be treated??

Or the 'darker ones' like:

Getting drunk and beating up anyone with a different culture, sexual preference or skin colour???

Does anybody remember the Australian movie "Wake in Fright"? It was shot in 1971. It's a reasonably good portrayal of what life was like back then. If you can find a copy of it, watch it, and you'll appreciate much more what Australia is now compared to what it was.

It starred Gary Bond, Donald Pleasence and Chips Rafferty, and was based in a fictitious town of Bundayabba (The Yabba) which reminded me of Mount Isa. The film itself was very well directed.

Cultural cringe alright.

That raises vague memories from late night TV of my youth....

The stabbing the roo to death scene and vomitting while having sex with the woman scene are familiar....

Gizmo: Familiar in what way? I'm only asking because (re the latter part of your sentence) .. unfortunately I still see people like that about on a Saturday night around some parts of the city of Sydney. Thankfully .. it's from a safe distance and I'm in a vehicle lol

Familar as in I have a memory of watching that scene in the movie...

Thanks Pansi, It always amazes me how we seem to be able to forget our past unless we want to make a nationalist statement.
It is sad the current generations (including mine) are so easily lead by a media hell bent on sensational coverage and commercialisation.
The truth seems to only be considered in our society when it is convenient.

See if you can find the movie. It really is an eye opener. We take the technology of today for granted apart from anything else.

We are much much better off now in terms of lifestyle than we were in the 1970's.

(I was pretty young then too LOL)

The White Australia Policy is summarised pretty well here:

Even if you wanted to return to those 'halcyon' days for some reason or other, there is no way that you can, because Australia is now a reasonable mixture of ethnicities, and they all have a vote.

So it remains as just an indelible blot on our past cultural landscape. It's faintly discernable in the distance as a harsh dry distant pinnacle that some people see as a land of milk and honey, and it's all the more luring because you can't actually get there.

It's a mirage. No more than that.
