Is Homophobia A Mental Illness

Anti-gay couple lose foster care right

A British court has ruled that a Christian couple cannot care for foster children because they disapprove of homosexuality.

Judges at London's Royal Courts of Justice ruled that laws protecting gays from discrimination take precedence over the couple's religious beliefs.

Eunice and Owen Johns, aged 62 and 65-years old, had previously fostered children in the 1990s, but what one social worker described as their "strong views" on homosexuality raised red flags with authorities in the English city of Derby when they were interviewed in 2007.

Eunice Johns said Monday that she was "extremely distressed" by the decision, which Christian groups also condemned.

But the judges on Monday ruled that Britain was "a secular state, not a theocracy."

Rather than throw scorn onto Homophobes, I recommend they seek out a doctor.

Good decision to keep children away from them until they return to wellness.

Crimethink!

The prevalence of actual mental illnesses, for instance paranoid schizophrenia, do not change dramatically as a result of ideological transformation.  This is because they are real maladies which are not produced by culture, but instead by basic deficiencies in neurological and endocrinal systems.

The vast majority of people in the world would be considered homophobic by the standards of Western progressives.  Depending on how you define homophobia, a plurality to majority of people within the West are homophobic.  As far I know most people within the West oppose homosexual "marriage", which recently has been pronounced as evidence of homophobia by the leftist intelligentsia.

Are most people in the world mentally ill because they do not subscribe to the agenda of the international homosexual conspiracy?  Were Western societies nearly one hundred percent mentally ill a century ago?  In the former Soviet Union it was routine to classify dissidents as mentally ill and requiring involuntary commitment to mental asylums.

I have noticed lately more and more that the left tends to describe its opponents as suffering from mental illness.  This politicization of psychiatry is extremely worrying, and it already has real world consequences such as the article in question.  I am not innocent either, as I routinely call liberalism a mental disorder.  The difference is that I don't really mean it and find the idea of subjecting liberals to psychiatric treatment absurd.

Yes. It is a phobia after all. They just need some counselling to come to grips with it.

I saw a person with a fear of spiders, is it arachnophobia, and she had to look at the spider in a glass jar, next step to touch the jar, then they let the spider out on the table, and eventually she allowed the spider to crawl on her arm.

The homophobes could watch videos, then go to a gay bar, then talk to a gay couple and finally spend a few hours with the gay couple until they realise there is nothing to be afraid of.

Like a 12 step program lol

Homophobes are not necessarily scared of homosexuals, and in fact I would wager that most are not.  Typically they simply do not approve of homosexuality, and often this extends to political opposition of the organized homosexual agenda.

It's not really a phobia at all, but homophobia is now part of the vernacular.

I'm not so sure about that. What makes us fear something - eg. acrophobia. We get to close to a ledge with a steep drop and immediately believe we're going to fall off - sometimes we do.

Perhaps this can apply to homophobia - if they get too close - they'll succumb.

It's not a big leap to think that a ledge with a steep drop could cause serious injury or death and that this would lead to fear.

It's a pretty big leap to think that close proximity to homosexuals will make one homosexual, and I'm really puzzled by the popularity of this argument.

I suspect that it has to do with some high-profile homophobes turning out to be closeted homosexuals.  It's not terribly surprising that closeted homosexuals would pretend to be homophobes in order to camouflage themselves, but it's very foolish to assume this mentality extends to homophobes at large.

As noted before, most people in the world today along with most people throughout human history are homophobes.  You are basically suggested that everyone's scared of turning into a homosexual.

Some people simply find the act repugnant.

As they have every right to do.

Doesn't mean they're mentally ill.

Half a century ago homosexuality was seen by doctors as a mental disorder. Now it's dislike is treated as a mental disorder. How long before heterosexuality will be presented as an evolutionry/social aberration?

How about - revolting & disgusting?
The State is the sick party here where people are not allowed to think as they want to.
It reminds me of the thought police in George Orwell's book 1984 -
a must read for all people.

Grin  Good one Pansi.

I think homophobia is the wrong term as applied to most heterosexual men. The correct term would be something like homoaidea, where the suffix derives from the Greek word for revulsion.

If we see two men kissing, we have a feeling of "Oh yuck" rather than "Aw geez, I'm scared". But let's face it, I'd have a very similar feeling at the thought of either Julia Gillard or Tony Abbot getting down and dirty.

When it comes to women, I think that most women tend to have an easier time, and some are actually attracted to powder puffs because they don't feel threatened in any way.

On the whole though, I tend to rely on my rationality rather than my gut feeling. They don't really do any harm, and they bring us some absolutely marvellous art and design work Tongue

In some cases, there may be some actual homophobia, particularly if the person is unsure of his sexuality and wants to think of himself as being on this side of the fence.

It's a strange thing, because Ancient Greek and Etruscan societies didn't have any such hang ups. One Etruscan mural from Tarquinia shows a chariot race, and two young men going playing the Etruscan game of chocolate salami in full view of other spectators.

Which would tend to indicate it's a 'learned' aversion, rather than a personal one.....

"A British court has ruled that a Christian couple cannot care for foster children because they disapprove of homosexuality."

Right there is the real sickness.  To condemn people in this way is a perversion in itself.  Freedom?  I don`t think so!

This is a myth peddled by the international homosexual conspiracy.  The primary difference between Greco-Roman views on sexuality and Christian ones is that in Christianity sexuality is considered to be binary--any deviation from heterosexual monogamy is sinful.

Their pagan predecessors did not, however, have the modern liberal view of homosexuality.  It was routinely condemned as decadent and disgusting by moralizers, and was often combated by state power.  At the same time their attitudes were flexible, as seen by widespread upper class bisexuality, pederastic pedagogy, and even militarized homosexuality (e.g. the Sacred Band of Thebes).

Most homosexuality in the classical world was also of the pederastic variety, in which homosexuality was not viewed as exclusive but rather a vice of older men with otherwise normal sexualities.
