What happened to 2020?
Dec 4th, 2010 at 5:20pm

For years we have been inundated about the imminent climate disaster that will befall us in 2020. But now it seems that the goalposts have been moved. the currentUN Climate Conference is now focussing on 2030 instead. Why? Call it cynical, but maybe its because 2020 is now pretty close and none of the predicted calamities have eventuated. So let's move the alarm out to 2030 - just far enough away to be unprovable and close enough to scare.

Just more manoevures from the Great CLimate Scare/Con.

If it is a con, then the most obvious reason would be that we are running out of oil and we need some motivation to point the future towards renewable fuel sources.

The downside to a con would be that we don't get to spend all available resources and leave future generations in the lurch.

Have we?  I think I've read all the technical reports that were ever written and haven't heard that one before. What's your reference ? - and who says that a disaster is about to occur in 2030?

COP16's strategy is to agree on Carbon reduction strategies put forward in Copenhagen. The goal remains the same - of limiting overall global temperature rise to less than 2 degrees.

I'm not aware of any additional Working Group I papers even being presented at Cancun.

Thanks for that response muso, I expected that you could provide a succinct reply that would clarify the situation.
Longy seems to get all of his information from the extreme right blogosphere, and then passes on their fantastic, and almost inevitably, false assertions, as accepted facts.
He comes in with these wild statements, with links from other opinion pieces as reference material, and then proceeds to argue his case as if he has established an agreed fact, but very much like beowulf/grendel, used to do, goes missing in action, when the primary element of his case is proven false.

keep deluding yourself - 'true believers'. COP16 is using 2030 as its date for 'immindent disaster'. it used to be 2020. and in 10 years time it will be 2040. it never changes. Climate Change is real. the predictions and hysteria are not. of all the predictions of global climate catastrophe, not ONE has come to pass. warming - measured in minute amounts - has been recorded and is farm far less that what has happened in the last 1000 years. the proof positive of ACC is an actual EVENT that proves it and none have been forthcoming.

and so now the date is 2030 - just far enough away to avoid having to prove it and lose enough panic the gullible.

Can you answer the original question? You made the assertion that we have been "inundated" about the imminent climate disaster that will befall us in 2020. Then you made the assertion that the current conference (I presume you mean Cancun) has switched the focus to 2030.

I'm curious as to your source of this "wisdom". If you make statements of this kind, you'll need to back them up to retain a modicum of credibility.

I'll make it easy for you. Here is the link to the conference programme:

http://cc2010.mx/en/about/conference-programme/conference-programme/

Now, can you provide a link to justify your initial claim?

"Now the Pentagon tells Bush: climate
change will destroy us
· Secret report warns of rioting and nuclear war
· Britain will be 'Siberian' in less than 20 years
· Threat to the world is greater than terrorism

The Observ er, Sunday 22 February 2004 01 .33 GMT

Climate change over the next 20 years could result in a global catastrophe costing
millions of lives in wars and natural disasters..
A secret report, suppressed by US defence chiefs and obtained by The Observer, warns
that major European cities will be sunk beneath rising seas as Britain is plunged into a
'Siberian' climate by 2020. Nuclear conflict, mega-droughts, famine and widespread
rioting will erupt across the world."

"Rising sea levels
Tidal gauge data have documented a global mean sea level rise of 10 to 20 cm during the 20th century.4 Approximately 70% of the world’s population live within 100 miles of seacoasts, and nearly 50 million people now live at risk of coastal flooding and displacement by tidal and storm surges.11 Sea levels are anticipated to rise by another 7.6 to 91.4 cm by 2020 due to a combination of polar ice cap and glacial meltdown, increased precipitation, coastal land erosion and subsidence, and thermal expansion form rising seawater temperatures.9,12,13 A 100 cm (1 m) rise in sea levels would flood 34% of Bangladesh, the Marshall Islands, the Florida Keys, and many other islands and coastal areas.3,4 If the entire Western Antarctic ice sheet were to melt, sea levels would rise by another 6.1 m.11 Flooding is now the most common type of natural disaster worldwide, and flash flooding, usually associated with tropical storms and hurricanes, is among the leading causes of weather-related deaths in the United States, along with heat wave-related deaths. As a result of climate changes, more frequently alternating Pacific Ocean surface and subsurface temperature oscillations, as NOAA asserts, or synergistic combinations, hurricanes of category 3 or greater now strike the continental United States approximately every 18 months."

"Climate Change Health Check 2020 Report

Friday, 04 April 2008 11:12

The effects of climate change will not only be harmful to the health of the planet-- they will impact the health of humans as well.

Climate change dramatically disrupts some of life’s basic essential requirements for health: water, air and food.
By 2020, it is anticipated that increasing climate change will have greater impacts on the health of humans here in Australia and globally.

In 2020, it is likely that Australian doctors and other health professionals will be seeing patients with a diverse range of climate change-related illnesses, from heat stress and other heat-related illness events (affecting the heart, blood vessels and lungs) to trauma from extreme weather events such as storms and heavy rains.

It is anticipated that there will be changes in airborne pollutants leading to increased respiratory problems, including asthma. The production of pollens, moulds and fungi, all of which cause allergic symptoms, may increase due to rising temperatures.

In those areas affected by long-term drought and other natural disasters, it is likely that patients will experience distress and more mental illness such as depression and post traumatic stress disorders.  These conditions are also expected to rise in patients who have survived severe weather events.

Diseases such as gastroenteritis and diarrhea are predicted to rise due to contaminated food and water.  One study showed that for every degree of increase in temperature the rate of hospitalisation of children with diarrhoea increased by 8 per cent. A changing climate will also affect the distribution of mosquito-related diseases such as Dengue fever and Ross River virus.  Previously, in Australia these diseases had been restricted to areas north of Broome, Katherine and Cairns, but could spread as far south as New South Wales depending on temperature rise."

Oh, was that a response? So a leaked secret report from the Pentagon with one oblique reference to the year 2020 is what you call an inundation? I'd suggest that for every report referencing 2020, you'll find about 5 referencing 2050. Here are 5 from about the same time:

http://www.abc.net.au/science/articles/2004/02/23/1051090.htm
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2004/01/0107_040107_extinction.html

http://www.themotorreport.com.au/22545/automotive-manufacturers-urged-to-halve-e...
http://www.buzzle.com/editorials/1-7-2004-49202.asp

http://foodsecurity.stanford.edu/publications/shifts_in_african_crop_climates_by...

OK, it's kind of weak, but please continue to explain the inferred emphasis on the year 2030 by the Cancun conference?

If the report prepared for the pentagon is their concern, they should be aware that their brief was to assume worse case scenarios, for every aspect of potential change from global warming, and then speculate on the worse case scenarios from that point of view.
Now only a pathetic and deceitful nimrod, would try and portray that as the opinion, of any scientific organisation.

What is it about the lunatic fringe and outright deceit, are they actually so stupid that they think anyone but their rusted on cheer squad will accept this garbage at face value?

You're talking about the Pentagon under Dubya? That was the only article you've come up with that mulled around the prospect of catastrophes in any vague way.

Unless you can substantiate your claims in some way, I'll lock this thread.

Go ahead. lock the thread. that would be SO IN KEEPING with the attitude about global warming - agree with us or be banned. there was an MSN report on COP16 which made multiple references to 2030. Frankly, I dont care if you believe me or not. I could show you the article - but it wouldnt matter. In the end you will just end up locking this thread.

All you have done is shown the contempt for free speech and ideas not pre-packaged by the UN and other climate alarmists that so typifies your type. Threatening to lock the thread was the most apalling thing Ive heard here.

If you actually have something that backs up your claims, feel free to post it. If your claims can not be substantiated, they are false claims, and there is no point in continuing the thread. It's as simple as that.

I have never banned anybody.

When I see you taking that attitude with Woody (green_wins) then you might get some credibility. I already told you the source and if that is inadequate then you'd better tell EVERYBODY that a confirmed source is necessary for every post. that will end this form overnight.

You can accept opinions contrary to your own or you can act like... this.

grow up. you are virtually proving my point about how the climate hysterics dont accept, tolerate OR PERMIT opinions contrary to their own. IM not actually a climate change sceptic. I am a sceptic of how it is reported and defined. Essentially I beleive there is an agenda to 'panic'. Ive seen it before. as a mod Id expect better from you.

Isn't MSN a messaging system? Look, I suspect that I know your source. Is it from a certain charity site that assesses risk at  2010 and 2030 for various countries for various criteria, including medical, agriculture, water supplies etc? It's quite an interesting study, but I'm not sure if it's as rigorous as it claims to be.  The year 2030 doesn't have any significance in itself, because it all depends on the extent to which emissions are reduced.

I am a sceptic, but not in the way that the term is misrepresented these days. That's why I submit all claims to meticulous scrutiny.  The IPCC Working Group I papers are very sound science.

I agree that some reporting is sensationalised. I'm interested in your source if you can find it.

For the record, I have taken that attitude with Green_wins, especially on the subject of nuclear power. Deep Greens run around like headless chooks spouting all kinds of nonsense when you mention nuclear power.

How can you say that with a straight face??? the science of the IPCC has come in for amassive hammering this year with MAJOR flaws exposed and the so-called 'peer review' system becoming nothing more than like minds agreeing with each other.

There is nothing 'sound' about the science at all. EVERY SINGLE ONE of the predictions of the hysterics hs failed to eventuate or even look like it.  2007 was the year the arctic ice would disappear. oops! even withthe added pressure of an enormous underwater volcano the ice increased. ditto antartica.  seal level rises??? hmm a few mms in a few locations and nothing else. global temperature rises are at best small and well within the range of the last 100 years and thats even if you beleive the measuring methodologies - which not everyone does.

and then there is the hockey stick graph - the most ridiculous peice of scientific nonsense ever foisted upon the world as fact. the IPCC believes it and refuses to discredit despite the fact that disproving it is trivial.

the science is deeply flawed, the hysteria is embarrassing and by 2025 there will not be a single ACC believer in the world because 25 years of indisputable climates facts will show it to be a 'chicken little' moment driven and encouraged by hysterics.

the deeper the shade of GReen they get, the dumber and more factually incorrect they get on almost ANY topic requiring science and/or logic.

So, sea levels are not rising?
Global temperatures are not rising?
We are not losing ice from the Arctic and Antarctic?

It was just a blip that peaked in '98, and now everything is going back to what it was before?

Is it reasonable to hold such views, and still declare that you are not a Global Warming Skeptic[sic]?
(I hate allowing denialists to self describe as skeptics, because it implies a degree of reasoned examination of the facts that they clearly have no right to claim)

LOL how many islands have drowned so far??

My point is, none of the changes like sea level rise and glacier melts have happened anywhere near as fast as originally predicted...

And I never claimed NOT be a sceptic on the subject of Anthropogenic Global Warming (or anthropogenic climate change)....

Is the world temperature rising??..YES (which is no surprise since we only came out of the Little Ice Age in about 1850 or so)

Is it driven by, or completely caused by HUMAN action.....Unlikely...

Do we have the power to change the rate of warming...NO...

A) sea levels are NOT rising beyond the few mm that is natural variaton
B) global temperatures are NOT rising beyond the small amount that is natural variation
C) polar ice is actually growing - as it does as part of natural variation

IS THAT clear enough? Climate changes and always has. it is part of the natural variation in the environmet. not ONE since climate event has occured that is atypical of natural variation.

Sea Levels.
Quote:
Current sea level rise is after all not exaggerated, in fact the opposite case is more plausible. Observational data and changing conditions in such places as Greenland suggest if there's a real problem here it's underestimation of future sea level rise. The IPCC synthesis reports offer conservative projections of sea level increase based on assumptions about future behavior of ice sheets and glaciers, leading to estimates of sea level roughly following a linear upward trend mimicking that of recent decades. In point of fact, observed sea level rise is already above IPCC projections and strongly hints at acceleration while at the same time it appears the mass balance of continental ice envisioned by the IPCC is overly optimistic ( Rahmstorf 2010 ).

http://www.skepticalscience.com/sea-level-rise.htm

Temperature Rising
Quote:
For those following the race for warmest year in the satellite tropospheric temperature record (which began in 1979), 2010 is still within striking distance of the record warm year of 1998. Here are the 1998 and 2010 averages for January 1st through October 31:

1998 +0.57
2010 +0.54

http://www.drroyspencer.com/2010/11/oct-2010-uah-global-temperature-update-0-42-...
(note that those figures are from Roy Spencer's site, someone that skeptics love, and are his satellite figures(which now are actually more useful, due to changes to calibration issues that had provided lower temps due to those calibration errors)

Arctic Sea Ice

Quote:
Sea ice extent averaged over October 2010 was the third lowest over the satellite data record at 7.69 million square kilometers (2.97 million square miles). This was 1.60 million square kilometers (618,000 square miles) below the 1979 to 2000 average for October, but 920,000 square kilometers (355,000 square miles) above the record low for the month, which occurred in October 2007.

http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/

Facts are easy to access, especially if you want to look at data, but if you just want to reference right wing bloggers that scour the world for an odd anomaly to use as their focus to try and pull down the whole scientific argument, built upon the work of many thousands of honest hard working people, then you can do that too, but it will only be accepted by those who do not care about the truth.

Now you come to my fav part of this debate - so-called facts. Only last year there was australian media attention on the fact (reported by a US govt agancy) that ice in the antartica had increased. and then you get this report that says i decreased.  we get nasa saying temperatures have dropped then they say they have increased. we get CRU head saying temps havnt risen at all since 1998 and others saying the opposite. So if the experts cant even get their FACTS right, why should we trust them at all? A british govt enquirt was held into the Bureau of Met. over its REPEATED claims that the coming years woudl be hottest on record only to have the COLDEST years in half a century.

my cynicism isnt ideological - it is based on these regular and absurd contradictions.

oh yeah and Venice hasnt sunk either.

so can you point me to a single INDISPUTABLE climate event that is outside the normal range of variation?

Denialists can easily score points by using the fact that 1998 was the hottest year ever recorded, and then claim that because we have not surpassed that yet, we are cooling, and they actually do say that.
They choose to ignore that this first decade of the twenty first century goes down as the hottest decade ever recorded, since records began, and that 2010, yes this year, still may take the top spot as the hottest ever, and will certainly be one of the top three.

The fact that we are getting cold weather anomalies in individual regions, is trumpeted as proof that global warming is a myth, but the fact is that changing weather patterns, including extreme spikes both up, and DOWN, have always been predicted as the outcome from this "GLOBAL" warming trend.

I'll split this thread at some stage because we're wandering off topic. I don't have time to participate today, but in general you can't talk about one or two years in isolation. For representative Climate data, you have to take running averages over many years.

That only seems to be done when it suits the hysterics. The hockey stick graph is a classic example of that. purports to be 1000 years of temperature history yet gets it totally wrong. No medieval warm period and no mini ice age. both are 'conveniently missing'. Yet it remains in use by the IPCC and other hysterics.

Yes Gizmo, that is a fair point, we have often before seen weather anomalies, but the current warming trend, and the rate of change, is accepted as being influenced by our emissions by scientists, and I accept their interpretation of the data, over that being proffered by the skeptics.
That is the best I can do, and all lay people always get back to this single point, of whether or not they accept the scientific consensus or not.
I do.

A) it isnt really consensus and there is considerable evidence of contrary opinions being squashed and even denied publication
B) Einstein wrote an article whose major point was that ONE fact overrides 300 contrary opinions. so where is the UNDENIABLE fact of climate events outside the normal range? There arent any.

Most 'scientific opinions' seems to be made by people whose areas of expertise is a long way from climate. the head of the IPCC is a train engineer. Ross Garnaut is an economist. and so it continues.

WHERE ARE THE REAL HARD UNDENIABLE FACTS???

Obviously you don't.
While you are searching for real, hard, undeniable facts, try and keep an eye on, extremely high probability, as well.
The degree of certainty you demand on this issue surpasses that you require for any other major decision you ever make in your life, and that may turn out to be problematic for you.

Well I don't...Mostly because I read a wonderful quote somewhere (I'll look) that said you can 'reverse engineer' human scientific achievement simply by looking at what science has declared impossible over the years...

For example, it was widely believed 'in the 1900's' that if a man travelled faster than 50mph, their chest would cave in from the pressure....It was proven wrong.
In the 1920's, it was an accepted scientific 'truth' that if we ever split the atom, it would cause a chain reaction and destroy the Earth..

It was scientifically impossible to break the sound barrier or to leave the atmosphere of Earth, let alone reach the MOON...
We did all of those things..

Science isn't an absolute....it evolves and changes as understanding changes.
Some 'scientific' pronouncements have been incorrect.....NOT through error, just through a lack of knowledge...

As to the 'difference' between historic weather anomolies and the 'current' weather anomolies......Is there anyone on Earth who has personal experience as to what the weather was like around the world, before 1650???
No, there's not....so we can ONLY guess as to what the frequency of storms, odd climate effects and earthquakes was BEFORE the Little Ice Age...

For all WE know. this might happen every 400 years..

You would have a point Gizmo, if all the achievements you spoke of had been caused through the work of a few maverick voices fighting against the establishment, but they weren't, were they?
No, they were achieved through the cooperation, and consensus, of the best and brightest of each generation.
You know what the best and brightest of this generation agree on as well, don't you.

And where do you get 'a few maverick voices' out of the AGW sceptic camp???

I was joking gizmo, I know that because the right wing of politics has made it its business to promote denialism, that almost half the population will therefore be somewhat swayed by the propaganda produced by these corporate sponsored "think tanks".
The reality is that every major scientific organisation on the planet however, accepts that anthropogenic climate change is occurring, hence the term maverick, or lone voices if you prefer.

You history of science needs a bit of reworking. Much of scientific advance has been done AGAINST THE FLOW of convneitonal thinking. Consensus has actually rarely acheived anything in scientific circles.

The reality is that every major scientific organisation on the planet however, accepts that anthropogenic climate change is occurring, hence the term maverick, or lone voices if you prefer.

You mean the organisations that year after year predict doom and gloom and are demonstrably wrong?  Dont they ever get embarrased by the repeated failures - often massive failures?

It's sort of hard to say..
It did cover Europe, the Middle East, Africa, India and Asia....But the lack of written records or exploration of the Southern Hemisphere at the time makes it hard to tell....

The medieval warming period was indeed a local phenomenon - local to the North Atlantic. You seem to have a pretty good inventory of half truths there - some valiantly expressed bold assertions that fizzled out when subjected to scrutiny.

It was caused by a particularly strong North Atlantic Oscillation, a highly localised event according to this paper in 2009:

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn16892-natural-mechanism-for-medieval-warmi...

Long - was there any scientific basis whatsoever for that utterance, or just the same kind of visceral displacement that   started off this thread?

Obviously you don't.
While you are searching for real, hard, undeniable facts, try and keep an eye on, extremely high probability, as well.
The degree of certainty you demand on this issue surpasses that you require for any other major decision you ever make in your life, and that may turn out to be problematic for you.

When it comes to risk management in Industry, we deal with the kind of risks that result in one fatality per 10 million years or less. We routinely work with such risks, taking appropriate action to control them.

If we allowed near certainties to occur, we'd be shut down pretty quickly. When it comes down to events that will occur on a worldwide, as opposed to local scale, it would be totally irresponsible to discount such risks because the are not "real hard undeniable facts"

However, there are actually facts that are undeniable in all of this. If you read the sticky thread on this board, the laws of physics come very close to being undeniable facts.

So if the original 1999 data is a peice (sic) of scientific nonsense then does that mean that the other independent studies referenced on this graph are also "scientific nonsense"? The problem muso is that according to the 'Climategate' emails, Mann 'used' Jones' data to create the "Hockey Stick"...and ALL the other lines in the graph post-date both Jones and Mann...So Jones/Mann's data was used as raw material for all the later graphs....

I just fixed up your post to put your comments outside the quote. Just to make it clearer what you're saying. I hope you don't mind.

What you're saying doesn't make sense - even just by looking at the data. Why do you think there is variation between the datasets?

I think you're either guessing or quoting incorrect assertions from another site.

When I get the time, I'll research the proxies used by the different researchers before I reply in detail.

For example, Mann et al. (1998), Jones et al. 1998 and Crowley and Lowery (2000) reconstructed the NH temperature based on annually recorded proxy data, with Esper et al. (2005) and Bri

(2006) carried out the reconstruction by focusing on pollen only and Harris and Chapman (2001) drew inference for the past temperature primarily based on borehole. Only a few reconstruc tion applications have tried to integrate data from sources with very di
fferent temporal resolution (e.g., Beltrami et al., 1995; Huang, 2004; Moberg et al., 2005; Haslett et al.,2006).

That quote is from "The Value of Multi-proxy Reconstruction of Past Climate" Bo Li, Douglas W. Nychka and Caspar M. Ammann.

It illustrates that the reconstructions were independent, which makes good sense. Why would you bother to report a study if it was simply based on somebody else's work?

Without jumping to conclusions, where did you get the idea that the data was from the same source?

Gizmo, I know that you are able to follow scientific arguments based on previous posts. I can't say the same for other posters. Surely you must smell a rat by now.  Be honest with yourself.

Well, here's a high degree of certainty, based on scientific experiments - more CO2 IS A GOOD THING. ANd it comes from that rabid right wing Big Coal mouth piece, Your ABC:

"CHRIS CLARKE: So at the Victorian Department of Primary Industry they're running experiments designed to calculate exactly what higher CO2 levels will do to wheat.

GLENN FITZGERALD: As it warms then of course it becomes gas and it then floats through the series of valves and regulators through the pipe and underground.

CHRIS CLARKE: In this experiment they're trying to create conditions as they might be decades from now. So through this process and then pumped out to the trial site?

GLENN FITZGERALD: Yes, exactly, all underground.

CHRIS CLARKE: Out in the paddock you can get a better feel for it. A series of pipes pour extra carbon dioxide over a trial plot of wheat. You can hear and feel the gas coming out.

So how much are you putting over this area?

GLENN FITZGERALD: In the centre of the ring there is a little sensor, a little cup that maintains that centre concentration at 550 parts per million which is the concentration we expect in the atmosphere over the whole planet in the year 2050.

CHRIS CLARKE: The experiment's in its third year.

GLENN FITZGERALD: CO2 is called a fertiliser, it's a CO2 fertilisation effect which means that carbon dioxide is a food source for plants if you will, that's the carbon that goes into the bulk of the biomass of the plant.

So raising levels of CO2 actually increases that growth, increases the biomass and in agriculture, increases the yield.

Given, of course, that there's sufficient water and sufficient nitrogen and that is what we're seeing here. We have a number of different varieties in this trial and we're seeing overall on average 20 per cent yield increase due to elevated CO2.

http://www.abc.net.au/landline/content/2010/s2851825.htm

Do your bit for the starving third world - say NO to green energy!

That's a big "given".  Overall Australia shouldn't be that badly off because we are already better organised for drought compared to the rest of the world (except maybe Israel).

Jumping off a building has wonderful therapeutic effects. It takes the weight off your feet and gives you a welcome escape from gravity, as long as you don't hit the ground.

My God, was that an analogy I gave? I had no idea. Let me try to make my point abundantly clear:

Life is easy,
as long as you don't get out of bed.

Motoring is safe,
as long as you don't start the engine.

Marijuana will not affect your judgement,
as long as you don't inhale.

Jumping off a building is fun!....
as long as you don't hit the ground.

Crops will produce higher yields in elevated CO2 atmospheres,
as long as you don't heat stress them, deprive them of moisture and deprive them of nutrients.

Scientists run computer simulations full of assumptions about of half-undrestood phenomena - boffin says it's all good, they are keepin' it real.
Scientists run a variety of field experiments to show that increased CO2 is actually a GOOD THING for crop yields - boffin gets testy and discovers all the ifs and buts he accidentally misplaced when the computer simultions were discussed.

Those dastardly scientific researchers.

Your philosopher mind games will not work here.  In essence, let's substitute Marijuana in your argument and see if it makes sense:

Quote:
Toxicologists run computer simulations full of assumptions about of half-undrestood phenomena - boffin says it's all good, they are keepin' it real.
Toxicologists run a variety of field experiments to show that increased marijuana has no effects on judgement - boffin gets testy and discovers all the ifs and buts he accidentally misplaced (the fact that the subjects didn't inhale) when the computer simultions were discussed.

Yeah, guud wan. Who ya gonna believe? Your East Anglia computer simulation or your lying eyes looking at actual experiments? Well, the computer, of course! It's a peer reviewed computer.

And that Freud sketch  - unsurprisingly irrelevant to any part of the discussion.

Soren, I don't think you're being deliberately obtuse here, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

The agronomy experiment was looking at one variable - the CO2 content - Ok?  The CO2 level approximates what it will be in 2050 based on a particular emission scenario.

It does not give indications of trends in seasonal temperatures or rainfall by 2050. If you are trying to imply that the agronomy experiment was ever designed to do that, then you are sadly deluded.

Now it's true that we could irrigate a greater proportion of our wheat. We already apply fertiliser, so the nutrient levels are less of a concern. The main variable is temperature, and if the average temperature shifts, it implies that the maximum temperatures shifts too. What happens when you get an extended hot period, is that the yields drop enormously.  It becomes academic whether you can get increased yields due to the CO2 content or not. It's not an important consideration in the scheme of things.

Here's a link to one effect of heat stress:

http://www.ypct.com.au/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=8047:heat-st...

Quote:
When a high temperature event occurs at the very sensitive stage of development there’s a window of two to three weeks around flowering when the maximum damage will occur.

“The other factor which will affect heat stress is how much water is in the soil profile. If there’s plenty of water in the soil profile the plant can keep its leaves 2 to 4 degrees Celsius lower than the air temperature, but if there’s not enough water in the soil profile the leaves can be up to 4C higher than the air temperature.

Apart from that, you're looking at just one crop in one corner of the globe.

Let me get this straight  - Nobody is claiming that absolutely all the effects of global warming will be detrimental. On the balance, they will be, but a few areas of human enterprise will benefit according to the forecasts presented in the last synthesis report, at least on the short to medium term.

The Freud sketch was a comment on your apparent inability to discern the difference between agronomists and atmospheric physicists.

You'll have to be more specific about the East Anglia University simulation. Which one do you mean? You're not harping on about dendrochronology data again are you?

- or do you mean HADCRUT3 ? If you can't specify what you mean, how am I supposed to comment on it?

Im trying to workout why the temperature was hotter in the Middle Ages than it is now...were people burning a lot of coal and oil back then? ...and then there was the Little Ice Age that Napoleon had a wee bit of trouble with in 1812 when he decided to gate crash Russia.

Perhaps on the 1990 IPCC Report??

Oh well I can't get the picture to copy, so I'll link the page..

Why would you go back to a report that is at least 20 years out of date? - besides, that graph applied to Western Europe.

Well wasn't Western Europe where Napoleon was fighting in 1812??

And PN's graph is of the Northern Hemisphere...

I love history too, but let's get back to the subject at hand - that of Global Temperatures. Regional studies, however fascinating they might be,  have no real relevance with respect to global temperatures.

Northern Hemisphere  temperatures are about 170 times more relevant that Western Europe. You might liike to do the maths.  Western Europe is 1,437,000 square kilometres. The surface area of the World is 510,072,000 square kilometers.

Northern Hemisphere temperatures, while not ideal,  represent a 50% sample. Western European temperatures represent a  0.3% sample. Not only that, but they are clearly different from broader studies.

Have I made my point?

No, because the 'subject at hand' was based on Beertruk's reference to the prolblem Napoleon had with the LIA in1812...
PN's graph was a response to THAT, and my graph/page was in reply to PN....

That is incorrect, my post was in respect of Beertruk's following comment, which I highlighted, "Im trying to workout why the temperature was hotter in the Middle Ages than it is now".

The reason for the regional variation in temperature in Europe during the Medieval period has probably been discovered.

I referenced this once before :

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn16892-natural-mechanism-for-medieval-warmi...

It makes for interesting reading.

And then there's this, which seems to indicate that the MWP and the LIA where present in Indonesia...
