Rather than run the risk of becoming Asia's bitches I'd rather we become part of the the USA...

that would be an extreme measure of course but no less extreme than the fantasy that Asia are going to leave lonely old whitey boy alone.

An extra prong to the economic approach is by formulating a pact with all other neutral countries. If any neutral country is attacked, all neutral countries see this an attack on them as well. All neutral countries defend against any and all attacks.

Thus making it no longer neutral.

Switzerland is completely neutral - it is a part of no pact or alliance.

That description above would be a mutual defence/alliance pact.

Going nuclear would spark a nuclear arms race with our neighbours.

A race Australia can not win ... and a path that would be taken by a non neutral country.

Perhaps those thinking of protection should consider using economics rather than war as the mechanism to protect ourselves.

For example : if Asia had an interest in protecting Australia since we supplied cheap renewable energy and healthy food to their peoples, they would.

Or as is human nature they kill the golden goose (invade)

So while offering no fear to our neighbours ... having the bite to make any potential aggressor think twice.

Its about no longer acting as we have in our past, more of thinking in new ways outside of the square.

Wouldn't that be an alliance?

An alliance of defence ... not an alliance of aggression.

as more countries decide the path of neutrality, so the threat of war decreases.

Yes defence alliance. Like the ones we have now.

We could follow the path of most of the Scandinavian countries and go "neutral". It hasn't done them too much harm.

Anything to get as far away from America as possible. We don't need to be involved in their fight for oil.

The USA was a neutral country. The Japanese attacked them.

If we want to be neutral we have to be able to stand on our own two feet.

Would Australians go cold turkey neutral overnight ... or would they require a crutch in the medium term.

An alliance of neutral countries would grow the list of neutral countries the fastest. More neutral countries decrease the requirement of an alliance so the crutch of an alliance will end.

An alliance would be a means to an end.

You know we are located at the bottom of the earth surrounded by ocean?
Who are you talking about NZ, Norfolk & Fiji???
Seriously??
When Britian sent it's Navy to the Faulklands it took them the better part of 2 weeks to get there.
No its either be strong enough to open a major can of whoop-ass or stay allied to Britain & the USA

Staying with the US will lead Australia into a US - China war over the South China Sea, or Taiwan, or the Antarctic or the many other issues ahead.

Australia has the choice of wars a plenty ahead ... or a new path of maturity and independence through neutrality.

If China goes to war with the US and is victorious or wins ground, neutrality will not save Australia.

But if you are talking about a neutral global alliance against China...I'm all for it.

Of course the western capitalists have been digging the graves of their own countries by financing China's industrial power and dismantling their own. Most western "captains of industry" should be shot for treason.
